    Re: NBA Betting Info. 2/5

Cavaliers’ controversial coaching change a big benefit to NBA betting
    By BIG AL MCMORDIE
In a week in which there were two meetings among the top three contenders for the Larry O’Brien Trophy, the games were overshadowed by a development off the court.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin decided to further sabotage his team’s chances by breaking his hand on a team equipment manager’s face. Of course, in the sports business, off-court drama often fuels the industry more than the games, themselves. Still, a lot is happening on the court. “Big” Al McMordie takes a look at the week ahead in NBA wagering.
    Spread watch
It’s true that first impressions die hard. And, after getting embarrassed by the Chicago Bulls in coach Tyronn Lue’s first game, many assumed that the firing of David Blatt was ill advised. Some even went further and proclaimed that Lue shouldn’t be allowed to coach in this year’s All-Star Game. But Lue’s Cavaliers rebounded off that Chicago loss to win their next four games (and cover their last three), including a 117-103 beatdown of the San Antonio Spurs.
Lue wants his team to play at a much faster pace than did Blatt, and Cleveland has scored 114-plus points in each of the last four games. Even more impressive is the fact that the Cavaliers’ “Big Three” of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love have all been important cogs in a more balanced offense. In Cleveland’s last two wins (over the Spurs and Pistons), all three players reached the 20-point plateau.
This week, the Cavs will play road games at Indiana and Charlotte, before coming back home to take on Boston and New Orleans. And, should Cleveland win its first two games this week, Lue would surpass Steve Kerr for the best win percentage of any coach in NBA history.
Certainly, Monday’s game at Indiana will be a tough test (the Pacers have covered four straight vs. the Cavs), but the upcoming schedule is not that daunting. If Lue’s men can get out of Indiana with a win, then I would expect Cleveland to have an 11-game win streak going into its game at Oklahoma City on February 21.
    Total watch
In our last two weekly articles, I highlighted the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans, as both had started to play a lot of games Over the total. And each team has continued on that front. New Orleans has played its last eight games Over while Memphis has done the trick in nine of its last 10 games.
Interestingly, a team I’ve yet to focus on this season is the defensively-challenged Houston Rockets. But I can’t ignore James Harden & Co. any longer. Houston has played 16 of its last 19 games Over the total, including its last five. And in those last five games, Houston’s allowed an average of 116.8 points. For the season, the Rockets’ defense is the worst of any team with a .500 (or better) record, ranked No. 28 in defensive efficiency. In comparison, the next-worst team, with a .500 (or better) record, is Memphis, which ranks No. 17.
On Saturday, Houston will host the Portland Trail Blazers. And, given that 14 of the previous 17 meetings have sailed Over the total (including eight of nine at the Toyota Center), we could see yet another high-scoring affair.
    Injury watch
Six-foot-10 Clippers star forward Blake Griffin beat up a 5-foot-8 equipment manager last week, and broke his hand in the process. Griffin was scheduled to play this week after rehabbing a quad injury sustained on December 25, but he now will be sidelined until late March. So his team’s already-dwindling championship hopes are hampered further.
The good news for Los Angeles is that it’s been playing well in his absence. Since Christmas, the Clippers are 15-3 SU and 13-5 ATS (though mainly against soft competition). But the bad news is that Griffin will miss L.A.’s three most important home games in the season’s second half: Spurs (Feb. 18), Warriors (Feb. 20) and Thunder (Mar. 2).
Without Griffin, the Clips have realized that their games against the NBA’s lightweights are “must wins” and they’ve generally taken care of business. This week, Los Angeles will play Minnesota (3-19 SU last 22), Orlando (2-12 SU last 14), and Miami (5-7 SU last 12), so the opportunity to pick up three wins is very good.
I especially like their chances to cover against the T-Wolves, as the Clippers have won 14 straight in the series (8-5-1 ATS). Even worse for the Timberwolves is the fact they’ll be unrested, and playing their third game in four nights, while the Clippers will have had the previous two days off.
    Schedule watch
The San Antonio Spurs have been unbeatable at home this season. They’re 25-0 SU and 17-7-1 ATS. But playing away from the Alamo City has been a different story. The Spurs are a mortal 14-8 SU and 13-9 ATS, including 6-7 SU/ATS versus non-losing teams, and 0-3 ATS their last three overall.
This week, San Antonio will travel to Dallas Friday. The Mavericks have controlled the series at home, going 4-1 SU and ATS in the last five games with their bitter rivals. Dallas will be playing with revenge from a 29-point loss less than three weeks ago, in San Antonio. And the Mavs are 26-15-1 ATS when playing with revenge from a 20-point (or worse) defeat. Don’t be surprised if Dallas delivers some payback Friday night.

      Preview: Indiana At Atlanta
When: 7:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
      Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
The up-and-down Atlanta Hawks are on an upswing at the moment and hope to make it last awhile. The Hawks will try to push their winning streak to three when they host another team struggling to find some consistency in the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.
Atlanta’s two wins come on the heels of a three-game slide that included a 111-92 loss at Indiana on Jan. 28. The Hawks looked a lot like the team that finished first in the Eastern Conference last season in the last two contests, especially during a 124-86 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday that saw eight players score in double figures. The Pacers had dropped six of seven before beating Atlanta in that Jan. 28 meeting, which kicked off a stretch of three wins in the last four games. The lone loss in that span came in overtime against the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers, and Indiana bounced back by opening their two-game road trip with a 114-100 win at Brooklyn on Wednesday.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Indiana, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)
ABOUT THE PACERS (26-23): Indiana’s inconsistencies in the win column have something to do with their inconsistencies shooting from the outside, and C.J. Miles gave the team a nice boost on Wednesday. The veteran small forward started the season hot but had not reached 20 points since before Christmas and was held to single digits in seven straight prior to breaking out for 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting against the Nets. “That’s who he is, he goes in and out,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel told reporters of Miles. “He slumps at times but it usually comes back around, and when he gets going, he’s pretty unstoppable. He had a great performance.”
ABOUT THE HAWKS (29-22): Atlanta has its own streaky shooter in guard Kyle Korver, who is shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range after draining 45.7 percent or better in each of his first three seasons with Atlanta. Korver followed up a scoreless performance at Miami on Sunday by burying 4-of-7 from beyond the arc on Monday but did not get much of a chance to find a rhythm in 19 minutes at Philadelphia on Wednesday. The veteran is 3-of-18 from the field in two games against Indiana this season, including 1-of-15 from 3-point range.
      BUZZER BEATERS
      1. Pacers C Ian Mahinmi (back) sat out his third straight game on Wednesday and is questionable for Friday.
      2. Hawks C Tiago Splitter (hip) sat out the last two games and remains day-to-day.
      3. Atlanta took all three meetings last season but Indiana took the first two in 2015-16 – both at home.
      PREDICTION: Pacers 102, Hawks 101

        Preview: Miami At Charlotte
When: 7:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, North Carolina
The Charlotte Hornets showed they are a serious playoff contender again last time out and look to climb back to the .500 mark for the first time in more than a month when the Miami Heat visit on Friday night. The Hornets knocked off Eastern Conference-leader Cleveland 106-97 on Wednesday without leading scorer Kemba Walker (knee).
Walker, who is averaging 20.2 points, is questionable to return against the Heat as Charlotte goes after its third straight win and sixth in eight games. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has made a big impact with two double-doubles in three games since returning from injury for the Hornets, who will face an equally hot Miami squad. The Heat have won five of their last six contests and got center Hassan Whiteside (oblique strain) back from injury in the 93-90 victory at Dallas on Wednesday. Miami recovered from giving up a season-high 115 points in a loss to Houston by holding Dallas to 39.1 percent shooting and veteran guard Dwyane Wade told reporters, “We’ve done a good job lately of learning from our mistakes.”
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), FSN Southeast (Charlotte)
ABOUT THE HEAT (28-22): While Chris Bosh (19.1 points, 7.5 rebounds) and Wade (18.7 points, 4.7 assists) have been producing all season, Miami needs the contributions of Whiteside among others to achieve its goals. Whiteside averages a double-double and contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in the victory over Dallas. Small forward Luol Deng has lifted his game of late, averaging 16.3 points and making 23-of-47 shots from the field over the past four outings.
ABOUT THE HORNETS (24-25): Guard Jeremy Lin stepped up in Walker’s absence with 24 points against Cleveland as Charlotte shot 49.4 percent from the field and dominated on the boards (49-28). Kidd-Gilchrist’s return from a shoulder injury has given the Hornets a boost as the versatile forward is averaging 14.7 points and 10.7 rebounds. Forward Marvin Williams is also playing a big role in the team’s improvement over the past few weeks while averaging 17.7 points in a five-game span.
        BUZZER BEATERS
        1. The Heat stood second in the league in scoring defense (95.8) and sixth in field goal percentage against (43.7) through Wednesday.
        2. Charlotte G Nicolas Batum, who has been hampered by a toe injury, is just 6-of-28 from the field over his last three games.
        3. The teams have split a pair of games this season with the Hornets winning 99-81 at home on Dec. 9.
        PREDICTION: Heat 98, Hornets 94

          Preview: L.A. Clippers At Orlando
When: 7:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
          Where: Amway Center, Orlando, Florida
The Los Angeles Clippers suffered a disappointing end to their homestand with a loss to the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday and will spend the next week on the East Coast leading into the All-Star break. The Clippers kick off the four-game trip by visiting the Orlando Magic on Friday.
The 108-102 loss to the Timberwolves snapped a four-game winning streak and dropped Los Angeles to 15-4 since power forward Blake Griffin was lost to a quad injury and then a broken hand. The Clippers had shown off a strong commitment on the defensive end by holding its previous four opponents to an average of 89.5 points but allowed Minnesota to shoot 50.6 percent from the field. Orlando watched Kevin Durant drain a 3-pointer in front of the buzzer in a 117-114 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday but managed to find some positives. “I think we’re going in the right direction,” guard Victor Oladipo told reporters. “I thought we competed (Wednesday) and I felt like a lot of guys wanted to win badly. We’ve just got to do that every night.”
TV: 7 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Florida (Orlando)
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (32-17): Los Angeles let its temper get the best of it on Wednesday, when Austin Rivers ended his night in the first half by receiving a pair of technical fouls and Chris Paul was hit with another in the final seconds that helped the Timberwolves seal the game. Paul apologized to his teammates after the game for drawing the untimely tech, but DeAndre Jordan put the loss squarely on the defense. “Our defense was terrible (Wednesday),” Jordan told reporters. “We were a step slow on everything. …The officials didn’t have anything to do with the way we played. We didn’t come out with the right mindset and the right spirit, that’s why we lost this basketball game.”
ABOUT THE MAGIC (21-27): Orlando went 2-12 in January and started February 0-2 with a brutal road trip to San Antonio and Oklahoma City. Oladipo had a chance to give the Magic a lead in the final seconds on Wednesday but had his layup attempt blocked by Serge Ibaka before Durant took the ball the other way. “I thought I had an opening, but Serge is known for blocking shots,” Oladipo told reporters. “I kind of wish I could get that one back. I’d do something different. I just have to learn from it because I’ll be in that situation again. I believe I’ll come out with a better result.”
          BUZZER BEATERS
          1. Jordan is averaging 18 rebounds in the last five games.
          2. Magic PG Elfrid Payton is 6-of-23 from the field in the last two contests.
          3. Los Angeles has taken four straight in the series, including a 103-101 home win on Dec. 5.
          PREDICTION: Clippers 112, Magic 106

            Preview: Philadelphia At Washington
When: 7:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, District of Columbia
The Philadelphia 76ers followed up an encouraging performance against the best team in the NBA by falling flat in a 38-point loss. The Washington Wizards, who host the 76ers on Friday, were also competitive against the Golden State Warriors the last time out and hope to not follow it up with a similar letdown.
Philadelphia had the game tied in the final seconds against Golden State on Saturday before falling on a last-second 3-pointer but could not muster a similar effort when it returned to the floor in a 124-86 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. “I feel like we didn’t come out with a lot of energy on both sides of the ball,” 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters. “I don’t think anyone played that well. … As a group, we did not have much.” The Wizards were within seven points of the Warriors with under four minutes to play on Wednesday before suffering a 134-121 loss. Stephen Curry’s 51-point outing overshadowed a tremendous effort from Washington star John Wall, who went for a season-high 41 points and added 10 assists.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, CSN Mid-Atlantic (Washington)
ABOUT THE 76ERS (7-42): Philadelphia overcame a 24-point deficit to tie the game late against Golden State but could not come up with the same kind of effort after falling into an early hole against the Hawks. The lone bright spot was shooting guard Nik Stauskas, who scored 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting. The second-year Michigan product got off to a slow start in his first season with the 76ers but scored in double figures in three of the last four games and is 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the last two.
ABOUT THE WIZARDS (21-26): Washington has lost seven of its last nine games but Wall saw improvement against the Warriors. “Ten out of 10, if we’re not playing them,” Wall responded when asked how many games the Wizards would win if they were able to maintain the level of play they showed on Wednesday. Wall, who went 17-of-25 from the field, broke out of an offensive funk that saw him fail to reach 20 points in seven consecutive contests.
            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. Wizards SG Bradley Beal (head) is averaging 16 points in the last four games while being held to a maximum of 30 minutes off the bench.
            2. Philadelphia SF Robert Covington is 3-of-14 from 3-point range in the last three games.
            3. Washington has taken six of the last seven in the series.
            PREDICTION: Wizards 112, 76ers 95

              Preview: Sacramento At Brooklyn
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
The Sacramento Kings will not be home again until after the All-Star break and left for a four-game road trip with a bitter taste after a 107-102 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. DeMarcus Cousins and the Kings will try to bounce back when they kick off the trip by visiting the Brooklyn Nets on Friday.
Sacramento has dropped five of its last six games, with the lone win in that span coming over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday in a game Cousins missed with a strained ankle. The All-Star center was back in the lineup on Wednesday and collected 30 points and 11 rebounds, but the Kings struggled to defend the 3-point line and are allowing an average of 114.5 points in the last six contests. The Nets, who sit 29th in the NBA with an average of 95.6 points through Wednesday, should not put quite as much stress on that defense. Brooklyn reached triple digits on the scoreboard in each of the last three games but lost them all as part of a five-game slide.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, CSN California (Sacramento), YES (Brooklyn)
ABOUT THE KINGS (21-28): Sacramento was facing a Chicago team without All-Star guard Jimmy Butler and instead allowed E’Twaun Moore to score a career-high 24 points. “Everybody comes in and scores career highs,” Kings guard Rajon Rondo told reporters. “… It seems like every other game it’s not a star player, it’s the other guys. Maybe it’s a lack of focus, maybe we don’t respect these guys. They get paid just like we do and they’re making the best of it.” The Kings are last in the NBA in scoring defense, allowing an average of 108.1 points.
ABOUT THE NETS (12-38): Brooklyn can relate to the lack of focus after letting a tight game against the Indiana Pacers get out of hand in the second quarter of Wednesday’s 114-100 loss. “It seems like every game we have a mental lapse,” Nets swingman Joe Johnson told reporters. “Whether it’s just turnovers, or – I have no idea. I wish – I don’t know. Just, we hurt ourselves from time to time.” Johnson has recently been the subject of trade rumors and showed off for opposing teams with 20 points and nine assists on Wednesday.
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. Brooklyn C Brook Lopez is averaging 27.3 points in the last four games.
              2. Kings G Marco Belinelli scored 18 points in each of the last two games after sitting out Saturday’s loss at Memphis with an illness.
              3. Sacramento snapped a three-game slide in the series with a 111-109 home win behind 40 points from Cousins on Nov. 13.
              PREDICTION: Kings 109, Nets 99

                Preview: Boston At Cleveland

When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, Ohio
After ending a quick road trip in losing fashion, the Cleveland Cavaliers look to reset in the opener of their longest homestand of the season. The first of the five straight games at Quicken Loans Arena pits the East-leading Cavaliers against the Boston Celtics, one of the hottest teams in the conference, on Friday night.
Kyrie Irving scored 26 points and LeBron James had 23 but Cleveland was outrebounded 49-28 in a 106-97 loss at Charlotte on Wednesday. The setback dropped the Cavaliers to 5-2 under new head coach Tyronn Lue, who also spent four seasons on the staff for the Celtics. The current unit in Boston is on quite a roll, claiming seven of its last eight games after a 102-95 win over Detroit. The Celtics’ lowest offensive output of the season came in an 89-77 loss to Cleveland at home on Dec. 15.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, CSN New England (Boston), FSN Ohio (Cleveland)
ABOUT THE CELTICS (29-22): This marks Boston’s first trip to Cleveland since it lost the first two games of a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs last April, and the surging Celtics are eyeing this as a chance to make a statement. “They’re No. 1 in the East right now, they’re playing very well, so I’m interested to see how we go out and play against them,” center Tyler Zeller told the team website. “We’ve got our work cut out for us, [but] we’re playing well, and hopefully we can keep doing it.” Zeller (six points, five rebounds, four assists, three blocks) was part of another solid effort by Boston’s bench, which had 42 points and more than half of the team’s 49 rebounds against Detroit.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (35-13): Cleveland had a nine-point halftime lead at Charlotte before the Hornets won the third quarter by a 33-17 margin, continuing a troubling trend for the Cavaliers, who have been outscored in the third in the last three games by a combined 32 points. “We need to figure it out,” James told reporters. “I don’t know what it is. I know the coaching staff will try to pinpoint what the case may be. We’re doing a good job of playing great basketball in the first half, and our third quarters are pretty awful right now.” Irving, who missed the first meeting with the Celtics, is averaging 25 points over the last four games.
                BUZZER BEATERS
                1. Irving is 38-of-60 inside the arc during his four-game hot streak, but 2-of-13 from 3-point range.
                2. Boston also shot a season-low 32.2 percent in its loss to Cleveland earlier this season.
                3. James needs 11 made free throws to become the 22nd player in NBA/ABA history to reach 6,000.
                PREDICTION: Cavaliers 97, Celtics 91

                  Preview: Memphis At New York
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
The Memphis Grizzlies are soaring and the New York Knicks are stumbling as the two teams prepare to meet Friday at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Grizzlies have won four straight games and eight of their past nine while the Knicks have lost seven of their last eight contests.
Memphis center Marc Gasol single-handedly destroyed New York with 37 points as the Grizzlies knocked off the Knicks 103-95 on Jan. 16. New York star Carmelo Anthony sat out that contest with an ankle injury but his presence isn’t preventing the Knicks from their current slide that has dropped them 4 1/2 games behind the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New York missed an opportunity to make up ground Thursday when it dug itself a 27-point, second-quarter deficit before succumbing 111-105 to the Pistons. The Grizzlies have been a sizzling offensive team during their nine-game charge, topping 100 points in each game while averaging 105.8.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Memphis), MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (29-20): Power forward Zach Randolph had scored 10 or fewer points in four of six games before breaking out with 22 points and 12 rebounds in Monday’s 110-95 victory over New Orleans. Randolph’s season averages of 13.8 points and eight rebounds are sharp dropoffs from last season’s marks of 16.1 and 10.5, respectively, but he was a huge factor against Anthony Davis and the Pelicans. “It never gets old to see him play the way he does. It’s not pretty by any means, but he gets it done,” point guard Mike Conley told reporters. “The way that he can maneuver without being athletic and still get the shots over big fellas and all that stuff, he’s a guy I look up to.”
ABOUT THE KNICKS (23-29): New York is attempting to remain in the playoff mix and that only made the slow start against Detroit more perplexing to coach Derek Fisher. “There’s no explanation for that,” Fisher said afterward. “Our guys just didn’t come to play in the first half, and we dug ourselves the kind of hole where everything has to go right for you to have a chance.” Center Robin Lopez was superb with season bests of 26 points (on 11-of-14 shooting) and 16 rebounds and is averaging 21.5 points and 14.5 rebounds during the past two games.
                  BUZZER BEATERS
                  1. The Grizzlies have won their last five home games against the Knicks.
                  2. Anthony has posted four straight double-doubles but is just 8-of-34 shooting in the last two games.
                  3. Memphis SF Matt Barnes (hamstring) is questionable after missing the New Orleans contest.
                  PREDICTION: Grizzlies 102, Knicks 93

When: 9:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
                    Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
The Chicago Bulls traditionally struggle in Denver and attempt to end an eight-game skid in the Mile High City when they visit the Nuggets on Friday. Chicago last won in Denver on Feb. 8, 2006, and dropped a 114-109 decision in last season’s visit.
All-Star guard Jimmy Butler (knee tendinitis) could miss his second straight game as his left knee flared up after playing 47 minutes on Monday. The Bulls defeated the Sacramento Kings 107-102 on Wednesday without Butler for only their fifth win in the last 14 games. Denver dropped an 85-81 decision to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday for its sixth loss in nine games. The Nuggets are close to being declared out of the Western Conference playoff race and embark on a four-game road trip following the contest.

ABOUT THE BULLS (27-21): Guard E’Twaun Moore moved into the starting lineup in place of Butler and poured in a career-best 24 points while playing 39 minutes. It was just Moore’s fourth start of the season and he went 4-of-5 from 3-point range, one make off his career high. “I knew our team needed a spark,” Moore told reporters. “It was so important to start the game off well and get us going in the right direction. I did that and it helped out a lot.”
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (19-31): Small forward Danilo Gallinari continues to be the bright spot for Denver, and he had 24 points in the loss to the Jazz. Gallinari has scored 23 or more points in four of the last five games and has 23 20-point games this season. Center Nikola Jokic looked superb when he had 27 points and 14 rebounds against Toronto on Monday, but he struggled against Utah with eight points and six rebounds while dealing with shoulder soreness.
                    BUZZER BEATERS
                    1. C Pau Gasol had 26 points and 19 rebounds as the Bulls recorded a 99-90 home win over the Nuggets on Dec. 2.
                    2. Denver SF Will Barton, who was named to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star weekend, is averaging 15.8 points over the past six games.
                    3. Chicago PG Derrick Rose is 12-of-36 shooting over the past two games.

                      Preview: Milwaukee At Utah
When: 9:00 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah
The Utah Jazz always like seeing ‘Milwaukee’ on the home schedule and look to post their 14th consecutive home victory over the Bucks on Friday. Milwaukee hasn’t won in Salt Lake City since posting a 119-112 overtime win on Oct. 20, 2001.
The Jazz are playing well and have won a season-high four consecutive games as they battle the Portland Trail Blazers for eighth place in the Western Conference. Utah is completing a six-game homestand, a stretch that began with a loss to Detroit before the winning streak. The Bucks are struggling with four straight defeats and six in seven games after falling 107-95 to the Trail Blazers on Tuesday and are finishing a three-game road trip. “It’s tough right now,” shooting guard Khris Middleton told reporters. “We’ve taken a step back. We’ve got one more game on this road trip. … We’ve got to find a way to win these games coming up.”
TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), ROOT (Utah)
ABOUT THE BUCKS (20-31): Once Milwaukee falls behind in games, it faces an uphill climb as the team’s 5.5 made 3-pointers ranks next-to-last in the NBA. Middleton leads the squad with 100 3-pointers and backup guard Jerryd Bayless is a distant second with 62. Center Greg Monroe isn’t a 3-point threat – he hasn’t even attempted one this season – but is playing well in the interior and his 17-point outing against Portland ended a streak of six consecutive 20-point performances.
ABOUT THE JAZZ (23-25): Power forward Derrick Favors has been a big factor in Utah’s winning streak and he is averaging 15 points and 7.2 rebounds in five games since returning from a back injury. The ailment sidelined Favors for 16 games, and he noticed how badly the club needed him in the lineup while being an observer. “I do make a difference,” Favors told reporters. “I just come out and provide a presence in the paint – defensively and offensively. I play hard.”
                      BUZZER BEATERS
                      1. The Jazz have won seven of the past nine meetings.
                      2. Milwaukee is allowing an average of 106.6 points over the last seven games.
                      3. Utah backup PG Trey Burke is just 13-of-44 over the past five contests.
                      PREDICTION: Jazz 101, Bucks 95

                        Preview: San Antonio At Dallas
When: 9:30 PM ET, Friday, February 5, 2016
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
The San Antonio Spurs drubbed Dallas by 29 points two-plus weeks ago and attempt to improve to 3-0 against the Mavericks this season when they visit Dallas on Friday. San Antonio limited the Mavericks to 83 points in both of this season’s previous meetings.
The Spurs will be without backup guard Manu Ginobili from four to six weeks after he underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a testicular injury. Ginobili was injured during Wednesday’s 110-97 victory over New Orleans when Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson kneed him in the groin. Dallas expects to have point guard Deron Williams (hip) back in the lineup after he missed Wednesday’s 93-90 loss to the Miami Heat. The Mavericks are averaging 92.3 points over the last four games, failing to reach 100 in each contest.
TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, KENS (San Antonio), FSN Southwest (Dallas)
ABOUT THE SPURS (41-8): All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge set season highs in scoring in each of the past two games with 28 points against Orlando on Monday and 36 versus New Orleans on Wednesday. Aldridge is averaging 26 points over the last four games and has begun settling in with the Spurs after a slow start. “The ball has been going in,” Aldridge told reporters. “I’m taking the shots and making them. Playing more confident and more like myself and I think that the team has fed off that energy.”
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (28-24): Veteran power forward Dirk Nowitzki had 28 points in the loss to the Heat for his first 20-point outing since Jan. 18. He will be looking to rebound from a horrid last outing against the Spurs, when he scored four points on 2-of-10 shooting in the 29-point loss. Center Zaza Pachulia had 10 points and 15 rebounds for his career-best 22nd double-double – he had 21 with the Atlanta Hawks in 2005-06 – on Wednesday and is averaging 13.8 rebounds over the last four games.
                        BUZZER BEATERS
                        1. The Spurs have won 17 of the past 21 meetings.
                        2. Dallas backup PG Devin Harris (toe) will sit out his seventh consecutive contest.
                        3. San Antonio C Tim Duncan (knee) is expected to miss his sixth straight game and seventh in the past eight.
                        PREDICTION: Spurs 109, Mavericks 102
