      Preview: Phoenix At Cleveland
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
Where: Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, Ohio
Tyronn Lue has his first win as an NBA head coach, and now he has an opportunity to put together his first winning streak. Lue’s Cleveland Cavaliers look to make it two in a row when they finish off an eventful four-game homestand against Phoenix on Wednesday.
After losing his debut at the helm following the firing of David Blatt, Lue guided the Cavaliers past Minnesota by a 114-107 margin on Monday, riding LeBron James’ 25 points and nine assists. “Things are still moving fast for me,” Lue told reporters following the victory. “I’m not used to it yet, but I think I’m ready for it. I think after tonight and the Phoenix game, I think things will start to slow down.” The Suns are a nice opponent to face when you’re just trying to get up to speed, as they’ve lost 16 of their last 18 games, including a four-point setback at home against Cleveland on Dec. 28. Phoenix opened a four-game road trip with a 113-103 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), FSN Ohio (Cleveland)
ABOUT THE SUNS (14-32): Archie Goodwin’s sudden surge is one of the few positives of late for Phoenix, as the shooting guard has posted three straight games with at least 20 points. He was an impressive 11-of-15 from the floor en route to a season-high 26 points at Philadelphia and contributed a career-high six assists in 29 minutes. Goodwin’s opportunity came when Brandon Knight was sidelined with a groin injury that is expected to keep him out for the entirety of the road trip.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (31-12): Cleveland might have an advantage on the sidelines in the form of newly hired assistant coach Mike Longabardi, who was the Suns’ defensive coordinator before being fired the day that the Cavaliers won in Phoenix last month. Another change under Lue was his decision to put Tristan Thompson back into the starting center spot, which paid dividends with a season-high 19 points and 12 rebounds against Minnesota. Thompson is averaging a double-double (10.1 points, 10.2 rebounds) in 13 starts.
      BUZZER BEATERS
      1. James needs 36 points to become the 17th player in NBA history to reach 26,000 for his career.
      2. Suns SF T.J. Warren had a game-high 23 points in the loss to the Cavaliers last month.
      3. Phoenix C Alex Len has recorded exactly 12 rebounds in three of his last four games.
      PREDICTION: Cavaliers 109, Suns 95

        Preview: Denver At Boston
When: 7:30 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
        Where: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts
The Boston Celtics have added a top-level offense to their already stout defense and are beginning to climb the standings in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics will try to push their latest winning streak to four straight when they host the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.
Boston is averaging 112.6 points in its last nine games and is among the league leaders in field-goal percentage defense. The Celtics put both on display in a 116-91 win at the Washington Wizards on Monday, as six players scored in double figures while the defense forced 20 turnovers and held Washington star John Wall to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. Boston will turn its offense loose against the Nuggets, who have allowed over 100 points in five straight and are coming off a 119-105 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The defense was horrible,” Denver guard Emmanuel Mudiay told reporters. “We definitely could have come out there with better energy.”
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), CSN New England (Boston)
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (17-28): Denver had a chance to make a move toward the top eight in the Western Conference with an eight-game homestand but dropped three of the final four to finish 4-4. “This homestand really is a microcosm of who we’ve been the whole year,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters about the team’s inconsistency. “We go 4-4. I wish it was better, but hopefully we can get right on this road trip.” Denver will stop at Boston, Washington and Indiana on the trip and will play 10 of their next 14 away from home.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (25-21): Boston point guard Isaiah Thomas is waiting to hear if he made the All-Star team as an Eastern Conference reserve and continues to put up All-Star numbers. The diminutive 26-year-old went for 23 points and nine assists while helping out defensively on Wall on Monday and has scored 20 or more points in six straight games. Thomas is averaging 23.1 points in the last eight games, during which the Celtics have gone 6-2 to move four games over .500.
        BUZZER BEATERS
        1. Celtics C Kelly Olynyk is 11-of-16 from 3-point range over the last five games.
        2. Nuggets C Nikola Jokic is averaging 16 points on 12-of-18 shooting in the last two contests.
        3. Boston took both meetings last season by a total of five points.
        PREDICTION: Celtics 110, Nuggets 98

          Preview: Philadelphia At Detroit
When: 7:30 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
Where: The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan
Reggie Jackson helped the Detroit Pistons finish their four-game road trip in style, and the talented guard has been significantly better at home this season. Jackson hopes to keep alive that trend when he leads the Pistons into a Wednesday night matchup against visiting Philadelphia.
The fifth-year pro had 29 points to lead Detroit to a 95-92 win at Utah on Monday to finish off a 2-2 trek, but he still averages four points more at home (21.3 points compared to 17.3 on the road) and also has significant upticks in all shooting categories and assists. Jackson scored 21 points in a 12-point victory at Philadelphia on Dec. 11, which was near the tail end of the 76ers’ 1-30 start. They’ve since gone 6-9 and coasted past Phoenix 113-103 on Tuesday, riding another outstanding performance by Ish Smith (20 points, nine assists, one turnover) to their third straight win against a Western Conference opponent. The effort helped Philadelphia survive the absence of star rookie Jahlil Okafor, who was out with the flu and has already been ruled out for Wednesday.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Detroit
ABOUT THE 76ERS (7-39): Even without Okafor in the middle, Philadelphia was the aggressor against Phoenix and got to the line 36 times, one shy of its season high. Robert Covington was the lone starter without a free throw but he continued to carry the load from the perimeter by nailing 5-of-12 3-pointers. He has taken 59 of his 75 shots over the last six games from beyond the arc, all while sporting a solid 44.1 percent mark.
ABOUT THE PISTONS (24-21): Center Andre Drummond has gone two straight games without a double-double for the first time this season, due in large part to coach Stan Van Gundy’s need to limit the big man’s minutes in crunch time to avoid foul-shooting issues. Drummond is 1-of-14 from the line in the last two games – both of which were decided by three points – while averaging 23.5 minutes. Backup center Aron Baynes has been the beneficiary of Drummond’s woes at the line, posting a total of 21 points and 15 rebounds (compared to 11 and 14 for Drummond) in those two contests.
          BUZZER BEATERS
          1. Detroit has won four of the last five meetings at home.
          2. Pistons F Anthony Tolliver has made 6-of-7 3-pointers in a two-game stretch.
          3. Sixers SG JaKarr Sampson missed Tuesday’s win due to an upper respiratory illness.
          PREDICTION: Pistons 101, 76ers 95

            Preview: L.A. Clippers At Atlanta
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
            Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
The Los Angeles Clippers were anxious to get All-Star forward Blake Griffin back from a quadriceps injury, but following a reported altercation with equipment manager Matias Testi, Griffin underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a broken right hand. Griffin, who according to published reports sustained the injury Saturday at a Toronto restaurant, is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks.
“This conduct has no place in our organization and this incident does not represent who we are as a team,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers and owner Steve Ballmer said in a joint statement released Tuesday before Los Angeles won at Indiana 91-89, improving to 12-3 since Griffin tore his quadriceps Dec. 25 versus the Los Angeles Lakers. The Hawks return home following a 2-2 road trip, beating Denver 119-105 Monday as forward Paul Millsap returned to the lineup. Millsap, who missed Saturday’s loss at Phoenix to attend his grandfather’s funeral, scored 22 points with nine rebounds as Atlanta rebounded from back-to-back three-point losses. “It was a much more focused effort,” Atlanta center Al Horford told reporters after adding 18 points.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (29-16): Griffin was averaging 23.2 points and 8.6 rebounds when he got hurt, but Los Angeles possesses plenty of firepower even with him sidelined. Guard J.J. Redick leads the NBA in 3-point shooting at 48.9 percent, and center DeAndre Jordan is shooting a blistering 71.4 percent from the field (tops in the league) while ranking second in rebounding at 13.5. Point guard Chris Paul remains one of the top playmakers in the league, scoring 26 points with seven assists and six rebounds on Tuesday.
ABOUT THE HAWKS (27-19): Millsap leads the Hawks in scoring at 18.4 and rebounding at 8.8, averaging 19.1 points in his past nine games while shooting 57.3 percent from the field and 32-of-38 from the free-throw line. Point guard Jeff Teague scored 12 points with 10 assists for his third double-double of the season for Atlanta, which has struggled with slow starts most of the season but scored 66 points in the opening two quarters. The Hawks rank second in the NBA entering Tuesday’s play in points off opposing turnovers (19.9) and third in steals (9.6).
            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. The Clippers have lost six in a row at Atlanta, their last victory at Philips Arena coming on Feb. 7, 2009.
            2. Los Angeles F Wesley Johnson hit five 3-pointers off the bench Tuesday, one away from his career high.
            3. Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer won his 125th game as Hawks head coach Monday; Budenholzer’s .595 winning percentage is highest in franchise history among coaches with 100 or more victories.
            PREDICTION: Hawks 103, Clippers 96

              Preview: Oklahoma City At Minnesota
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
              Where: Target Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Oklahoma City Thunder look to defeat Minnesota for the third time this month and the 10th consecutive time overall when they visit the Timberwolves on Wednesday. Oklahoma City won January’s previous two matchups by an average of 12.5 points and have emerged victorious in 23 of the last 26 meetings.
The Thunder have won eight of their past nine games and small forward Kevin Durant fueled the latest victory by scoring a season-high 44 points in Tuesday’s 128-122 overtime win over the New York Knicks. Point guard Russell Westbrook is also rolling and his 30-point performance versus New York marks his seventh outing of 20 or more points this month. Minnesota has dropped 16 of its last 19 games and has the second-worst record in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves are 7-17 at home but have won their last two – against Phoenix and Memphis.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, FSN North (Minnesota)
ABOUT THE THUNDER (34-13): The 40-point outing was the second of the season for Durant – he scored 43 points against the Orlando Magic on Oct. 30 – and he also collected 14 rebounds as Oklahoma City topped 100 points for the 16th time in 17 games. “I’m not really into how many points I score anymore,” Durant told reporters after running his streak of 20-plus point games to 32. “I try to play winning and consistent basketball. If I play a good brand of basketball, if I play the right way, that stuff will come.” Shooting guard Dion Waiters (14 points in 43 minutes) moved into the starting lineup on at least a temporary basis in place of Andre Roberson, who will miss three-plus weeks with a knee injury.
ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (14-32): Rookie center Karl-Anthony Towns has lived up to being the No. 1 overall selection and has scored 20 or more points in three of the past four games. Towns is averaging 21.8 points and 12.5 rebounds during his latest hot streak to raise his season averages to 16.1 points and 9.7 rebounds. Shooting guard Andrew Wiggins was the NBA’s Rookie of the Year last season and has scored 20 or more points in eight of the past 10 games to increase his scoring output to 20.8.
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. Durant is averaging 25.5 points against the Timberwolves this season, while Wiggins is averaging 23.5 versus the Thunder.
              2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams (elbow) returned from a two-game absence and contributed nine points and eight rebounds against the Knicks.
              3. Minnesota starting PF Kevin Garnett (knee) and backup SG Kevin Martin (wrist) will both miss their second consecutive contest.
              PREDICTION: Thunder 111, Timberwolves 101

                Preview: Charlotte At Utah
When: 9:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah
The Charlotte Hornets have pulled out of their funk and are one win away from getting back to .500. The Hornets will try to reach the break-even mark and earn their fourth straight win when they visit the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
Charlotte did the Jazz, who are trying to keep pace for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, a favor on Monday by outlasting the eighth-place Sacramento Kings 129-128 in double overtime. That victory came exactly one week after the Hornets won another double-overtime game, taking down Utah 124-119 at home behind a franchise-record 52 points from Kemba Walker. The Jazz have dropped three of four beginning with the loss in Charlotte and had a string of five straight games scoring in triple digits come to an end with a 95-92 loss to Detroit on Monday. “We put ourselves in a position to be in those situations where we didn’t play very good for the majority of the game, and at the end of the game we picked it up,” Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters after a final chance came up short against Detroit. “We’ve been really good with our execution at the end of games and that’s something I think this team has done very well. We don’t always score.”
TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), ROOT (Utah)
ABOUT THE HORNETS (22-23): Walker is taking on a heavier load with Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb dealing with toe injuries and is averaging 32.6 points over the last five games but seems to be running into defenses focusing specifically on him. Walker was a combined 12-of-50 from the field in the last two games and finished with 24 points in 45 minutes on Monday. The defensive focus on Walker allowed Troy Daniels to find some open space, and the reserve guard buried eight 3-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points against the Kings.
ABOUT THE JAZZ (19-25): Utah did not have power forward Derrick Favors in the last meeting due to a back injury but finally got the big man back from the 16-game absence on Monday. Favors contributed 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 20 minutes off the bench and will be worked back into the rotation slowly. “It feels great having Derrick back,” Jazz center Rudy Gobert told reporters. “He played great. It’s good. He’s going to be back even more next game and we’ll be back to our old ways.”
                BUZZER BEATERS
                1. Charlotte C Cody Zeller (shoulder) is expected to miss the game.
                2. Utah G Rodney Hood is 12-of-21 from 3-point range in the last three contests.
                3. The home team has taken each of the last four meetings.
                PREDICTION: Hornets 102, Jazz 101

                  Preview: Dallas At Golden State
When: 10:30 PM ET, Wednesday, January 27, 2016
                  Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, California
The Dallas Mavericks are one of the few teams to defeat Golden State this season and will take aim at halting the Warriors’ long homecourt winning streak on Wednesday. Golden State has won 39 consecutive home games — five behind the NBA record set by the Chicago Bulls (1995-96) — after dismantling the San Antonio Spurs 120-90 on Monday.
Dallas rolled to a 114-91 home victory over the Warriors on Dec. 30 to end a seven-game losing streak in the series. The Mavericks led by as many as 30 points and connected on 14 3-pointers while making the defending NBA champions look like mere mortals. Golden State thrashed San Antonio — the NBA’s second-best team — in every area during the huge showdown that the Warriors approached as a statement game. “Every time we have an opportunity to prove who we are and take another step in the journey, we’re ready for it,” standout guard Stephen Curry told reporters. “It wasn’t always that way. This core has been together for a while and understands how to mentally prepare for nights like this.”
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Southwest (Dallas), CSN Bay Area (Golden State)
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (26-21): The Mavericks are just 7-8 in January and were pushed to the end by the lowly Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday before escaping with a 92-90 road victory. Veteran forward Dirk Nowitzki drained the tiebreaking baseline jumper with 2.1 seconds left to save a Dallas team that tallied just 15 fourth-quarter points. Small forward Chandler Parsons had 17 points against Los Angeles and is averaging 26.5 points during the past four contests.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (41-4): Curry missed the loss to Dallas with a leg injury but is back at full strength now and he scored 37 points in the rout of the Spurs. The reigning MVP often appears unstoppable and has scored 30 or more points in seven of the past nine games and has made 56 3-point baskets during the stretch. “He has ridiculous shooting range, and it distorts the whole chessboard,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “Defensively, you have to commit so far out there that it creates angles for other guys. He’s so good putting the ball on the floor and getting into the creases.”
                  BUZZER BEATERS
                  1. The Warriors have won their last five home games against Dallas.
                  2. Dallas C Zaza Pachulia (Achilles) has sat out the past two games and is questionable for Wednesday’s tilt.
                  3. Golden State backup PG Shaun Livingston is 16-of-20 shooting in the past four games.
                  PREDICTION: Warriors 122, Mavericks 104

                    Re: NBA Betting Info. 1/27

Raptors’ betting results have them ready to run with East’s elite
                    By BIG AL MCMORDIE
There have been 665 games played so far this season, but none has had the importance as Monday night’s clash between the last two NBA Champions.
Indeed, the season’s first matchup between the Warriors and Spurs is arguably the biggest regular season game in the history of the NBA – at least until the second, third and fourth meetings later this year.
It’s not only the first time in NBA history that two teams with .850 (or better) win percentages have met this late in a season, but it could also have serious implications for home-court advantage in the NBA Playoffs. Of course, there will be 53 other games played this week, so let’s see what’s on tap.
                    Spread watch
The Toronto Raptors have quietly won eight straight games, and have covered seven of those eight (including all four games last week). And their only ATS defeat in this stretch was by a mere 1.5 points, in a 106-103 road win at Orlando.
Admittedly, many of Toronto’s wins were against soft, Eastern Conference competition. But Sunday’s 112-94 blowout of the Los Angeles Clippers – a team which had won 12 of its previous 14 – served notice that the Raptors may be ready to challenge LeBron James for Conference supremacy.
This week, Toronto will play three home games against the Wizards, Knicks and Pistons, so there’s no reason its win streak can’t stretch to 11 games. And its game against New York looks to be a prime spot to step in and play on the white-hot Raptors. Toronto is 6-0 ATS its last six vs. division rivals, and will be playing with revenge from a 111-109 loss to New York back in November.
                    Total watch
Alvin Gentry’s New Orleans Pelicans finally seem to be picking up the first-year coach’s offense, as they’re (finally) moving the ball around and have broken out to win their last three games by 15-plus points (the first time since January 2008 they’ve accomplished that feat).
The Pelicans have scored 114, 115 and 116 in those three games, and stretched their streak of Overs to five games. On Monday, New Orleans will welcome the defensively-challenged Houston Rockets to the Smoothie King Center. Later this week, both Sacramento and Brooklyn will pay visits.
None of New Orleans’ opponents this week rate in the upper half of the league’s best defenses, while Houston (26th) and Brooklyn (27th), in particular, are among the absolute worst in adjusted defensive efficiency. Given that 14 of New Orleans’ last 17 meetings with Brooklyn have gone Over the total, look for a high-scoring game between those two teams Saturday.
                    Injury watch
The San Antonio Spurs will be without Tim Duncan for Monday’s game at Golden State, and possibly their games later this week at home versus Houston and at Cleveland. Though the “Big Fundamental” is averaging career lows in minutes (26), points (8.86) and rebounds (7.54), it’s easy to overlook just how valuable he is – especially on the defensive end.
Indeed, Duncan is really the “quarterback” of their league-best defense, as he works the back line and communicates to his teammates what’s going on. The fact that he’s currently ranked No. 1 (of 431 players) in Defensive Real Plus-Minus illustrates just how effective he remains, at 39 years old.
Certainly, the betting markets appreciate his value. For Monday’s Spurs-Warriors game, the pointspread moved from Golden State -3 to Golden State -4.5 upon the announcement that Duncan would not play. San Antonio will likely start David West until Duncan returns. And West has been superb in his first season with the Spurs, shooting a career-best 56.3 percent from the field, and is currently ranked No. 44 (of 431) in RPM, and No. 60 (of 333) in PER.
                    Schedule watch
The Charlotte Hornets have the biggest home/road dichotomy in the league, in terms of win percentage. At home, the Hornets are 16-8, but they’ve won just five of 20 games away from “The Hive.” This week, the Hornets will embark on a four-game road trip, with stops at the Kings, Jazz, Blazers and Clippers.
Monday’s game at Sacramento looks particularly troublesome, as the Kings are on a five-game SU/ATS win streak (coinciding with the insertion of Willie Cauley-Stein into the starting lineup), including impressive upsets of the Jazz and Clippers on the road. And Sacramento will be playing with revenge from a 127-122 overtime loss at Charlotte, in which they blew a 22-point lead.
Even worse for Charlotte: the Kings have turned around their league-worst defense (107.1 ppg), and have held their last four opponents under 42 percent shooting, and their last three foes under 100 points. As the Hornets are 5-16 SU and 5-15-1 ATS this season when they don’t shoot better than 42 percent, that doesn’t bode well for Steve Clifford’s crew on Monday.
