        NBA Betting Roadmap, Week 13
        by Al McMordie
It’s been 44 years since the NBA has had two teams in the same season, like Golden State and San Antonio, that have smashed their opponents. One has to go back to 1972, when the Bucks (+11.16 ppg) and Lakers (+12.28) were at a level similar to that of the Spurs (+14.21) and Warriors (+11.15). And, like this season, those two teams were both in the Western Conference, so the “de facto” NBA Championship was in the semi-finals, and won by the Lakers, four games to two. We’re still a week away from the first regular season meeting between these two juggernauts, so let’s take a look at what is on the horizon this week.
        Spread Watch
The San Antonio Spurs are, by most metrics, not only the best team in the league this season, but also the best team “in Vegas.” The Spurs have, by a wide margin, the best point differential (+14.21), the best pointspread differential (+4.72), and the best ATS win percentage (.682). To illustrate just how dominant the Spurs have been, consider that the second-best point differential belongs to Golden State, which trails San Antonio by 3.06 ppg. The second-best pointspread differential is owned by Detroit, which has covered the spread by 2.07 ppg, a whopping 2.65 ppg less than San Antonio’s margin. And the second-best ATS win percentage is Orlando’s .605, significantly less than the Spurs’ .682 mark. To further illustrate how special a season San Antonio is having, consider that the Spurs have only lost back-to-back games against the spread once, and that was back on November 18-20, against the Nuggets and Pelicans. This week, San Antonio will play the Suns and Lakers. And an argument can easily be made that the Suns — and not the 76ers or Lakers — are currently the NBA’s worst team. Phoenix has won just one of its last 14 games, and has been outscored by 13.42 ppg in this stretch. For the season, the Suns have covered just 38% of the time, and have failed to cover the spread by an average of -3.63 ppg. Both of those stats rank dead last in the league! And, lest one think the Spurs might be “overvalued” vs. Phoenix, consider that, since 1991, in the 2nd half of the season, teams have covered 76.1% of the time if they had a total pointspread differential of +6.79 or better (i.e., by how many points a team has covered the spread, relative to its opponent). Also, teams have cashed 65.3% since 1991 in the second-half of the season, if they’ve covered the spread in 26.8% more of their games than their opponent. Look for the Spurs to rout the Suns on Thursday.
        Total Watch
For years, the Memphis Grizzlies have been marketed as “Grit-N-Grind,” to reflect their defensive-oriented principles and blue-collar attitude. Indeed, over the previous four seasons, Memphis had allowed 92.9, 89.2, 94.5 and 95.0 ppg. And they went ‘under’ the total in 55.6% of their games (195-156 ‘under’). But this season, there’s been very little “grit” on Beale Street, and the Grizzlies have seen their defensive average balloon to 98.7 ppg. Memphis also ranks in the bottom half in defensive efficiency. Last week, Memphis played all four of its games ‘over’ the total, as it gave up 100.2 ppg. This week, the Grizz will play New Orleans, Denver and Minnesota. Each of those three teams ranks in the bottom 10 in defensive efficiency. The game against the Nuggets, especially, looks like a prime game to go ‘over’ the number as the Nuggets also played all of their games last week ‘over’ the total.
        Injury Watch
On Saturday, the Chicago Bulls announced center Joakim Noah will need surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder. He’s expected to miss the rest of the season. Noah initially injured himself on December 21 against Brooklyn. He returned three weeks later, on January 11, only to get re-injured four days after that vs. Dallas. This is a significant blow for the Bulls. But not just because Noah was averaging 8.8 rebounds a game. It was also widely speculated he would be used as trade bait next month to fetch Chicago additional scoring help. So, with this injury, the Bulls’ hopes on that front are dashed. Additionally, Kirk Hinrich was also injured in that Dallas game, and he’ll miss Monday’s game against the Pistons, at the least. The Bulls are currently on an 0-5 ATS run, and own (along with the Pelicans) the NBA’s second-worst ATS win percentage (.384). With games against (W) Detroit (.578 ATS %), (L) Golden State (.600 ATS %), and Boston (.550 ATS %) on deck this week, it could get much worse before it gets better.
        Schedule Watch
The Los Angeles Clippers open their week with a big game against Houston, the team which knocked them out of last year’s Playoffs. The Clips have already lost the first two games of this regular season vs. Houston, and have dropped five straight to the Rockets dating back to last season’s Playoffs. Certainly, Los Angeles will desperately want to win this game, on Monday night. Following that, the Clippers will travel to Cleveland on Thursday, and then play without rest the next night, in New York. That Friday game, at the Knicks, looks to be a potential landmine for the Clippers, and especially if LA comes into that game off back to back wins. Over the past 2+ years, the Clippers are 18-24 ATS when playing without rest, including 5-13 ATS off back-to-back wins.
        Good luck, as always…Al McMordie.

The last month has not been quite as kind to either club, and both will be looking for the kind of spark that can turn their fortunes around when the Magic host the Hornets on Friday.
Orlando ran its latest losing streak to four and fell below .500 with a 96-87 loss to the NBA-worst Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. “Our lack of competitiveness is frightening, really,” Magic coach Scott Skiles told reporters. “They were pushing us all around on both ends of the floor, making it hard for us to do anything. And we just basically capitulated.” Charlotte waived goodbye to .500 earlier this month and has dropped 10 of its last 12. The Hornets looked like they were ready to turn things around when Kemba Walker went off for a club-record 52 points in a double-overtime win over Utah on Monday but did not put up much of a fight in a 109-95 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), FSN Florida (Orlando)
ABOUT THE HORNETS (19-23): Charlotte’s problems are on the defensive end, and the team could be on the verge of getting some help. Small forward and defensive standout Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who has been out since the preseason after suffering a torn right labrum, was cleared for contact this week and returned to practice. “It’s kind of like your first kiss,” Gilchrist told the team’s official website of his return to practice. “Yes! I just felt that it was a weight off my shoulders.”
ABOUT THE MAGIC (20-21): Orlando shot 39.3 percent from the floor against the lowly 76ers, including 4-of-17 from 3-point range. “We have to find a way,” forward Tobias Harris told reporters. “We have to find a way as a team to sneak out a win, build some confidence and find some momentum. Obviously, we’re frustrated as a group, but we have to stay positive and be ready for the next one. We have to let this one pass, learn from it and be ready for the next one.” Orlando hits the road for five of the next six after finishing up with the Hornets.
          BUZZER BEATERS
          1. Magic G Victor Oladipo (knee) sat out Wednesday and is questionable.
          2. Hornets G Jeremy Lamb (toe), C Cody Zeller (shoulder) and G Nicolas Batum (toe) are all questionable.
          3. Orlando put seven players in double figures in a 113-98 home win over Charlotte on Dec. 16.

            Preview: Chicago At Boston
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
            Where: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts
The Chicago Bulls became the latest team to get throttled by the defending NBA champs and the schedule does not let up anytime soon. The Bulls begin a stretch in which they play 10 of 12 games on the road – including two trips to Cleveland – with a visit to Boston on Friday night.
Chicago enters the challenging portion of the slate on a sour note after dropping a 125-94 decision to Golden State at home on Wednesday, the squad’s fifth loss in seven games. “It’s embarrassing, man,” Bulls guard Derrick Rose told reporters after his team gave up its most points in regulation since Nov. 3. “We let go of the rope and stopped communicating. If you don’t have communication on the defensive side when you’re playing a team like that, it can get ugly.” The Celtics have also struggled to get stops of late, having given up an average of 116.7 points in a 1-2 road trip. Guards Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley combined for 40 points in a 115-109 loss at Toronto on Wednesday.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, WPWR (Chicago), CSN New England (Boston)
ABOUT THE BULLS (24-17): Rose was the bright spot in the loss to the Warriors with 29 points and he has scored at least 20 in consecutive games for just the second time this season. The three-time All-Star is averaging 22.3 points on 50.9 percent shooting over a three-game span after missing one contest with knee issues. Rose (18 points) was one of six Chicago players in double figures in a 101-92 win over the Celtics earlier this month.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (22-21): Boston had a six-point lead at halftime in Toronto and it lost a fourth-quarter advantage in an overtime loss at Dallas earlier in the week, more indications that a normally solid defense is not performing when it needs to. “We never adjusted to what they were doing and all of those guys got real comfortable,” forward Jae Crowder told the media after the loss to the Raptors. Reserve center Kelly Olynyk is doing his best to keep up on the offensive end by nailing 16-of-26 3-pointers in a six-game stretch and averaging 16.8 points 26.3 minutes over his last four contests.
            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. Crowder, whose career scoring average is 7.1 points, has reached double figures in 27 of the last 28 games.
            2. Bulls C Pau Gasol had one point on 0-of-8 shooting against the Warriors after scoring a season-high 31 points his previous time out against Detroit.
            3. Both teams shoot 43.4 percent from the floor, tied for 23rd in the league.
            PREDICTION: Celtics 102, Bulls 99

              Preview: Utah At Brooklyn
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
The Utah Jazz lost the first two contests of a four-game road swing in excruciating fashion and attempt to notch a much-needed victory when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Utah suffered a double-overtime loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday and then fell 118-111 in one overtime to the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
The Jazz have dropped four of their past five games to fall behind the Sacramento Kings for eighth place in the Western Conference and the loss to the Knicks dismayed small forward Gordon Hayward. “We controlled and outplayed them the entire game and then in the last six minutes we kind of fell apart,” Hayward told reporters. “We’re a young team. We need to learn from these and take positives from it but it’s definitely frustrating.” Brooklyn has lost four consecutive games, all by double digits, including a 91-78 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. “I don’t think it was our best effort since I’ve taken over,” interim coach Tony Brown told reporters. “I don’t know if it was just because it was Cleveland. I don’t know, but we could do a lot better on both ends of the floor.”
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ROOT (Utah), Yes (Brooklyn)
ABOUT THE JAZZ (18-24): Shooting guard Rodney Hood (29 points) and Hayward (27) combined to score more than half the points against New York in a contest in which Utah allowed 81 points after halftime. Coach Quin Snyder was disappointed with his team’s lack of physical play in the second half and said his squad needs to “be tougher.” Hood made five 3-pointers and his effort represented a nice bounce-back outing from a 4-of-17 shooting performance against Charlotte, and also marked his first 20-point contest since Jan. 4.
ABOUT THE NETS (11-32): Brooklyn never got the offense rolling in the loss to Cleveland as it scored 17 points in two different quarters. Small forward Joe Johnson had just three points on 1-of-7 shooting after scoring 22 points against Toronto two nights earlier and power forward Thaddeus Young was critical of the team’s performance. “We didn’t have the effort and it wasn’t being displayed,” Young told reporters. “At the end of the day, we have to continue to fight and continue to play and just continue to be ready each and every night. (Wednesday) we weren’t ready.”
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. Hayward averaged 24 points as the Jazz won both meetings against the Nets last season.
              2. Brooklyn backup PG Shane Larkin is 10-of-29 shooting over the past four contests.
              3. Utah PF Derrick Favors (back) has missed 15 straight games but the team insists he’s close to returning.

Preview: L.A. Clippers At New York
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
The Los Angeles Clippers seek their seventh consecutive victory over New York when they visit the Knicks on Friday. Los Angeles still is without power forward Blake Griffin but remains hopeful that the perennial All-Star will return from a quadriceps injury during the middle of next week.
The Clippers lost the opener of a five-road trip, 115-102 to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, marking the fourth time in five games they have allowed more than 100 points. “Our defense has been unacceptable,” point guard said Chris Paul said afterward. “We’re not being disciplined. It’s not on the coaches. It’s us.” New York is 2-0 on a three-game homestand with the opener being a 119-113 double-overtime victory over the Philadelphia 76ers and the second contest lasting one overtime before the Knicks prevailed 118-111 over the Utah Jazz. New York is 7-3 during its last 10 games and All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony is averaging eight assists in the past two games.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (27-15): Griffin has missed 12 consecutive games but recently has picked up the intensity of his workouts and should return before the end of the road trip. Paul has picked up some of the offensive slack by scoring 25 or more points in four of the past six games, including a 30-point outing in the loss to the Cavaliers. Paul’s assist totals have remained high without Griffin to pass the ball to as he has recorded 11 or more in eight of the games Griffin has missed.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (22-22): Anthony is headed to his ninth NBA All-Star Game after being selected as a starter for the eighth time Thursday. Anthony’s scoring average has dipped to 21.5 this season but he’s being more of a team player and also contributing 7.6 rebounds and a career-high four assists. Anthony recently miss two games with an ankle injury but displayed he is fit by averaging 45.5 minutes in New York’s last two contests.
                BUZZER BEATERS
                1. The Clippers posted a 111-80 win at New York last season, and the 31-point margin of victory is the club’s largest at Madison Square Garden.
                2. Knicks C Robin Lopez is averaging 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots in the past two games.
                3. Los Angeles reserve SG Jamal Crawford has scored in double digits in 11 straight games and is averaging 16.2 points during the stretch.

                  Preview: Miami At Toronto
When: 8:00 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
Where: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario
The Toronto Raptors are firmly established in second place in the Eastern Conference while the Miami Heat have surrendered their spot in the top four. The Heat will try to find enough healthy bodies to compete when they visit the Raptors on Friday.
Miami finished the game with just eight healthy players on Wednesday and went down weakly in a 106-87 loss at Washington. The setback marked the third in a row and the sixth in seven games for the Heat, who are averaging 80 points in the last three contests. Toronto pushed its winning streak to six in a row by outlasting the Boston Celtics 115-109 on Wednesday and is putting up an average of 104.8 points during the streak. DeMar DeRozan is leading that offensive charge and totaled 64 points on 25-of-50 shooting in the last two games.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Sun (Miami), Sportsnet One (Toronto)
ABOUT THE HEAT (23-20): Dwyane Wade (shoulder soreness) sat out the loss at Washington on Wednesday and was eventually joined on the bench by center Hassan Whiteside (oblique) and forward Luol Deng (right eye). “When it’s another guy going down it’s just tough,” Chris Bosh, who is one of the few healthy bodies left, told reporters. “Two weeks ago we were going into a West Coast road trip really trying to prove ourselves with a whole roster, and now we’ve got five or six or seven guys out, and it’s just a tough pill to swallow.” Wade has missed two of the last four games and is day-to-day along with Deng and Whiteside.
ABOUT THE RAPTORS (27-15): DeRozan has gone for 30 or more points three times in the last five games and put up 18 of his 34 in the third quarter on Wednesday as Toronto overcame a deficit. “Get him the ball and get out of the way,” point guard Kyle Lowry told reporters of DeRozan. “He’s going to shoot his little Kobe Bryant fadeaways and he’s going to make them. Get him the ball and get out of the way. When he’s on one of them rolls right there, you sit back and watch a bit.” DeRozan put up 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting in a 108-94 win at Miami on Dec. 18.
                  BUZZER BEATERS
                  1. Raptors SF Terrence Ross is 6-of-10 from 3-point range over the last two games.
                  2. Heat G Beno Udrih (neck) and F Josh McRoberts (knee) are questionable for Friday.
                  3. Toronto has taken three of the last four in the series.

                    Preview: Milwaukee At Houston
When: 8:00 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
                    Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas
The Milwaukee Bucks have won three in a row and rolled past the Charlotte Hornets and the Miami Heat on the first two stops of a four-game road trip. The Bucks will try to clinch a winning trip when they visit the Houston Rockets on Friday.
The Bucks are trying to turn around their season and make a move up the standings in the Eastern Conference, and getting the defense straightened out of late has been a key to the turnaround. “It is encouraging,” guard Jerryd Bayless told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “There’s a lot of season left. We’ve just got to continue getting better and hopefully it all comes together at the right time.” The Houston Rockets are having their own issues on the defensive end and surrendered 263 points in dropping their last two games. James Harden recorded 33 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and 14 assists in a 123-114 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday but could not keep his team from falling back to .500.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), ROOT (Houston)
ABOUT THE BUCKS (19-25): Milwaukee held its last three opponents to an average of 90.7 points and is coming off a 91-79 victory at the Miami Heat on Tuesday. “We were getting stops and getting out and running,” Bucks interim coach Joe Prunty told reporters. “The stops were the catalyst. Then when we got it up the floor, even if we didn’t get a fast-break point, we got into our offense quickly. We were able to move the ball second and third side and make them work defensively.” The Bucks are 5-2 in their last seven games since surrendering an average of 120 points in back-to-back losses to San Antonio and Chicago on Jan. 4 and 5.
ABOUT THE ROCKETS (22-22): Harden did most of his damage on Wednesday without the help of center Dwight Howard, who left the game in the first minute with a sprained ankle. “He dominates the paint, so just rebounding, his offensive presence,” Harden told reporters. “Everything he brings to our team was missed.” Howard, whose status for Friday will be determined after he is evaluated on Thursday, was riding a streak of 10 straight double-doubles, capped by his 36-point, 26-rebound performance in Monday’s overtime loss at the Los Angeles Clippers.
                    BUZZER BEATERS
                    1. Bucks G O.J. Mayo (hamstring) missed the last three games and is questionable for Friday.
                    2. Rockets G Patrick Beverley (ankle) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.
                    3. Houston has won four straight in the series while averaging 112.3 points.

When: 8:30 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki could sit out for the second consecutive game when the Mavericks host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. Nowitzki missed Wednesday’s overtime victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves due to a knee injury and the club doesn’t yet have a handle on his availability for upcoming games.
Nowitzki was experiencing swelling in the right knee due to fluid in the joint but the soreness was mild in nature. “The good thing is I really didn’t have any pain,” Nowitzki told reporters. “It was just the swelling and that’s why they decided to hold me out. When you’re old, there’s always something coming up and this came out of nowhere.” Nowitzki was one of four starters rested by coach Rick Carlisle when the Mavericks dropped a 108-98 decision in Oklahoma City on Jan. 13. The Thunder posted a 109-95 home victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday for their sixth straight win and 21st in the last 25 games.
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, FSN Southwest (Dallas)
ABOUT THE THUNDER (32-12): Point guard Russell Westbrook had 16 points and 15 assists in the win over Charlotte and has posted 15 assists four times this month. “He just picks and chooses his spots,” small forward Kevin Durant said afterward. “He knows when to go for rebounds, knows when to score, knows when to make the right play. He’s playing at a nice level right now.” Durant scored 26 points against the Hornets and has scored 20 or more points in each of his last 29 games.
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (25-19): Small forward Chandler Parsons stepped up with Nowitzki sidelined and scored a season-best 30 points on 13-of-20 shooting. “That’s a huge hole to fill,” Parsons told reporters of Nowitzki’s absence. “We need guys to step up and everyone contributed.” Parsons underwent knee surgery in the offseason and got off to a slow start but has played better of late and has three 20-point outings this month.
                      BUZZER BEATERS
                      1. The Thunder are 2-0 against the Mavericks this season and have won eight of their last 10 home games in the series.
                      2. Oklahoma City backup SG Dion Waiters is 4-of-19 shooting over the past two games.
                      3. Dallas backup PG Raymond Felton (eye) could return after sitting out the Minnesota game.

                        Preview: Indiana At Golden State
When: 10:30 PM ET, Friday, January 22, 2016
                        Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, California
Whatever brief malaise the Golden State Warriors found themselves in a week ago has completely disappeared. The Warriors will try to post their third straight victory by 30-plus points when they return home to host the Indiana Pacers on Friday.
Golden State dropped two of three games last week and began its three-game road trip with a 113-95 setback at Detroit on Saturday before crushing the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls by a combined 65 points. “That was beautiful basketball, especially against one of the best defensive teams in the NBA,” Warriors interim coach Luke Walton told reporters after Wednesday’s 125-94 demolition of the Bulls. The Pacers were playing like one of the best teams in the NBA when they lost to Golden State on Dec. 8 and are not exactly at the top of their game at the moment. Indiana snapped a three-game slide by gutting out a 97-94 win over lowly Phoenix on Tuesday and has dropped three of its last four road games.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Indiana, CSN Bay Area (Golden State)
ABOUT THE PACERS (23-19): Indiana allowed the Warriors to shoot 54.7 percent and fell behind by as much as 32 points in the third quarter before fighting back to make it a respectable 131-123 setback in the first meeting. The Pacers were just happy to get a win on Tuesday, no matter what the competition was, after surrendering an average of 116.7 points in three consecutive losses. “That was our main focus today; we had to get back to playing defense,” guard Monta Ellis told reporters. “We use our defense to lead our offense and we set the tempo at the beginning of the game, and we were able to get out and run and make some shots and get a comfortable lead so when they make their run we’re able to still hold them off and close them out.”
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (39-4): Golden State handed LeBron James the worst loss of his career on Monday and gave the Bulls their largest home loss since 2009 on Wednesday, cementing once again their status as the top team in the league with a showdown against the San Antonio Spurs looming on Monday. The Warriors totaled 71 assists and 18 turnovers in the last two games and were a model of efficiency at the offensive end against two of the best defensive teams in the East. Small forward Harrison Barnes, who returned to the starting lineup with a 2-of-11 effort from the field against Detroit, found his form with the top unit by going 12-of-21 against Chicago and Cleveland.
                        BUZZER BEATERS
                        1. Pacers G George Hill (personal) missed the last two games and was ruled out for Friday.
                        2. Warriors G/F Andre Iguodala is averaging 15 points on 11-of-15 shooting in the last two games.
                        3. Golden State has taken three of the last four in the series.

The red-hot San Antonio Spurs take aim at their 13th consecutive victory when they visit the lowly Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. San Antonio hasn’t lost since Christmas Day and has posted nine double-digit victories — including six by 20 or more points — during its latest winning streak.
The Spurs opened a three-game road trip with an easy 117-89 victory over the Phoenix Suns and will close the excursion with a showdown against the Golden State Warriors on Monday. First-time All-Star Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points and the bench tallied 66 points in the rout of Phoenix. The Lakers are struggling with four consecutive losses and eight of their last nine games. ABOUT THE SPURS (37-6): Leonard was the NBA Defensive Player of the Year last season and the NBA Finals MVP two seasons ago and his growing reputation reached a new level with fans voting him as a starter for the Western Conference All-Star team. “It was great,” Leonard said on TNT after the Phoenix victory about receiving a congratulatory call from coach Gregg Popovich. “You just know you’re moving in the right direction of your career. But that isn’t a big goal for me. I’m trying to get an NBA championship. That’s my main focus.” Point guard Tony Parker (hip) sat out against the Suns and could be held out again Friday with the Warriors looming.
ABOUT THE LAKERS (9-35): Bryant is averaging just eight points on 30 percent shooting during the past five games as he continues to have issues holding up physically. He is averaging 16.3 points and shooting a career-worst 34.5 percent from the field but his popularity remains high as he was the top All-Star vote-getter for the fourth time in his career. Reserve forward Brandon Bass (foot) also is ailing after scoring a season-best 18 points in Wednesday’s 112-93 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
