        Preview: Philadelphia At New York
When: 1:00 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
After a rocky road trip, the New York Knicks will look to stay hot at home when they host Philadelphia in the traditional MLK Day matinee at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks were surging entering a two-game stretch away from the Garden, but they first fell at Brooklyn and then at Memphis on Saturday.
Leading scorer Carmelo Anthony missed both setbacks with a sprained right ankle and New York is now 0-4 on the season without its superstar. The Knicks have won four straight at home and four in a row over the 76ers, who are coming off a rare runaway win. Jahlil Okafor had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way in a 114-89 rout of Portland on Saturday, snapping Philadelphia’s four-game slide and allowing the club to recover from a blown lead in an overtime loss to Chicago two days earlier. “We felt like we threw one away the other night,” coach Brett Brown said. “We think that we’re playing good basketball lately and I think the games confirm that.”
TV: 1 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE 76ERS (5-37): Rookie Richaun Holmes is one of many Philadelphia players whose playing time fluctuates as Brown tries different rotations, but he has made the most of his opportunities on the offensive end. The forward had 17 points in 27 minutes against Portland, his first double-digit effort since pouring in 17 points in 18 minutes in a win over Minnesota on Jan. 4. Holmes has played in four of the Sixers’ five wins, averaging 10 points in 14.3 minutes on 65.2 percent shooting.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (20-22): Anthony did not rule out returning against the Sixers and New York has been able to keep star rookie Kristaps Porzingis active despite his sore shoulder. Porzingis led the Knicks with 17 points against the Grizzlies and has reached double digits in eight straight games, one shy of matching his season high. The holiday matinee begins a stretch in which New York plays 10 out of 13 games at home.
        BUZZER BEATERS
        1. Anthony is averaging 14 points – 7.6 below his season mark – while shooting 30 percent in two wins over Philadelphia.
        2. 76ers SG Nik Stauskas (shoulder) missed the game against Portland but is expected to return Monday.
        3. Philadelphia is 0-24 against the Eastern Conference.
        PREDICTION: Knicks 103, 76ers 94

          Preview: Utah At Charlotte
When: 2:00 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, North Carolina
Rudy Gobert is displaying that he’s close to top form and the Utah center attempts to follow up a huge performance when the Jazz visit the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. Gobert missed 18 games with a knee injury earlier this season and put forth his top effort of the campaign with 18 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots in Saturday’s 109-82 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The superb outing came in Gobert’s sixth game since returning and the points and rebounds represented his season high in both categories. “The more I touch the ball, the better I feel,” Gobert told reporters. “If there’s some periods I don’t touch the ball, I can get a little rusty. I just feel better. My legs are stronger. My cardio was better this game, I didn’t get really tired. That was a good thing.” Charlotte is slipping down the Eastern Conference standings with nine losses in 10 games and suffered a 105-92 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday. Things could get worse for the Hornets as the contest against the Jazz is followed by a stretch in which six of the next seven games are on the road.
TV: 2 p.m. ET, ROOT (Utah), FSN Southeast (Charlotte)
ABOUT THE JAZZ (18-22): Having Gobert approaching full strength is a necessity for a club that continues to operate without power forward Derrick Favors. Persistent back troubles have Favors in jeopardy of missing his 14th consecutive game and repeated speculation of his imminent return have not come to fruition. Valuable reserve forward Trevor Booker sat out Saturday with a concussion and cleared the league’s protocol on Sunday, so he is expected to be available to play against the Hornets.
ABOUT THE HORNETS (18-22): Charlotte has failed to reach 100 points five times during the 1-9 slide and is missing the firepower injured center Al Jefferson (knee) could provide. Charlotte coach Steve Clifford has hinted the lineup will be tinkered with once the team is back to full strength and forward Marvin Williams said the club has just gotten away from what it does best. “Everybody’s still confident in our abilities and what we can be because we have shown what we can be on both ends on the floor,” Williams told reporters. “We can be tough and scrappy on defense and we’ve got a lot of guys that can score the ball and make plays on offense.”
          BUZZER BEATERS
          1. The Jazz have won 11 of the past 12 meetings.
          2. Utah rookie F Trey Lyles is averaging 17.3 points on 20-of-30 shooting over the past three contests.
          3. Charlotte reserve G Jeremy Lamb (toe) is in jeopardy of missing his third straight game.
          PREDICTION: Hornets 97, Jazz 93

            Preview: Portland At Washington
When: 2:00 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, District of Columbia
Just when it looked like the Portland Trail Blazers were turning the corner, they went out and threw up one of the worst performances of the season. The Trail Blazers will try to bounce back from the blowout loss to the Philadelphia 76ers when they visit the Washington Wizards on Monday.
Portland knocked off Oklahoma City and Utah before beginning its road trip with a 116-104 victory at Brooklyn and appeared ready to march back into the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Instead, the team allowed the NBA-worst 76ers to shoot 55.3 percent from the field in a 114-89 shellacking on Saturday. The Wizards had their own winning streak come to an end on Saturday as John Wall’s tying attempt was off the mark in a 119-117 loss to Boston. Washington had won the previous four games to get back to the .500 mark and is averaging 112 points in the last five contests.
TV: 2 p.m. ET, CSN Northwest (Portland), CSN Mid-Atlantic (Washington)
ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (18-25): Portland was on the second night of a back-to-back after starting the trip at Brooklyn but did not use fatigue as an excuse for the performance in Philadelphia. “Terrible,” point guard Damian Lillard told reporters. “We didn’t come out and show them the respect that we should have shown them. They competed harder than us, they played better defensively, they played better offensively. It was probably one of our worst games of the season.” Lillard managed 14 points on 4-of-18 shooting on Saturday after putting up 33 points the previous night.
ABOUT THE WIZARDS (19-20): Washington’s latest scoring binge has been fueled by Wall, who recorded 36 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and seven steals in Saturday’s loss and nearly sent the game to overtime with his mad dash from end-to-end before his layup attempt rolled off the rim. “I was going as fast as heck and just looked up at the clock and tried to get it off the glass,” Wall told reporters. “I should have dunked the ball but I didn’t have the energy left to do that.” Wall will get some backcourt help on Monday from Bradley Beal (stress reaction), who sat out the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday.
            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. Trail Blazers G C.J. McCollum is shooting 33.3 percent from the field in the last five games.
            2. Wizards C Marcin Gortat (knee) returned from a three-game absence on Saturday and contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds in 36 minutes.
            3. The home team took each of the two meetings last season, with Washington grabbing a 105-97 win behind 21 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds from Wall on March 16.
PREDICTION: Wizards 110, Trail Blazers 107

              Preview: New Orleans At Memphis
When: 2:30 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
              Where: FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis center Marc Gasol is fresh off a hot performance and that qualifies as bad news for the New Orleans Pelicans, who visit the Grizzlies on Monday. Gasol poured in 37 points in Saturday’s 103-95 victory over the New York Knicks, and the point total was one shy of the career-best 38 Gasol scored against the Pelicans on Dec. 1.
Gasol hit all 16 of his free-throw attempts and collected 13 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots in the 113-104 win over New Orleans. Against the Knicks, Gasol was 15-of-29 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to help Memphis win for the fourth time in five games. New Orleans has won consecutive games as it aims to go on a roll and get into the competition for a Western Conference playoff race. Power forward Anthony Davis has averaged 23 points in two games since returning from a back injury.
TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Detroit, FSN Southeast (Memphis)
ABOUT THE PELICANS (13-26): Backup small forward Ryan Anderson scored a season-high 32 points and matched a season best with six 3-pointers in Friday’s 109-107 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Anderson has reached double digits in eight straight games and 12 of the last 13 and was scintillating while making 12-of-19 shots against Charlotte. “We moved the ball, we found the open man, we were incredibly unselfish,” Anderson said afterward. “My teammates did a great job of finding me when I was wide open. It’s fun to play that way.”
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (23-19): Memphis is 8-1 when Gasol reaches 30 points in his career and the effort against New York impressed coach Dave Joerger. “The tone of his body was, ‘I’m going to score until you stop me,'” Joerger told reporters. “He’s driving into the paint, they’re crashing down into the paint and someone has to come and help. That opens it up for other people. If not, he is in that mindset that he is going to go. I thought that was very positive for us and it opens up other things.” Gasol is averaging 25.3 points over the past three games after scoring 12 points or fewer in each of the previous four games.
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. The Grizzlies have won four of the past six meetings.
              2. New Orleans C Omer Asik had just three rebounds against Charlotte after averaging 12.3 over the previous three games.
              3. Memphis SF Jeff Green is averaging 17 points off the bench the past two games and scoring just seven total points over the previous two contests.
              PREDICTION: Grizzlies 101, Pelicans 94

                Preview: Chicago At Detroit
When: 3:30 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan
The Chicago Bulls look like an Eastern Conference contender one week and a lottery team the next. The Bulls will try to pull out of their latest funk and go back to looking like a contender when they visit the Detroit Pistons on Monday.
Chicago lost four of its last five games, with the lone win in that span coming when Jimmy Butler scored 53 points in an overtime triumph at the NBA-worst Philadelphia 76ers. Butler followed that up with four points in an 83-77 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, and the Bulls had center Joakim Noah go down with a separated shoulder in the setback. Chicago could have used Noah and any of the other weapons on the roster against the Pistons, who are flying high after knocking off the NBA-best Golden State Warriors on Saturday, 113-95. “Everybody is going to hype it like we did something crazy,” rookie forward Stanley Johnson told reporters. “We just played hard. Played hard, played smart, played together.”
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN Detroit
ABOUT THE BULLS (23-16): Noah, who is averaging a career worst of 4.3 points and 38.3 percent shooting while coming off the bench in Fred Hoiberg’s first season as head coach, sat out nine straight games bridging December and January with an injury to the same left shoulder. The veteran, who will undergo surgery and is expected to miss four-to-six months, played a season-high 38 minutes at Philadelphia on Thursday but lasted only six minutes before getting tangled up with Dallas center JaVale McGee and dislocating the shoulder on Friday. “The details of the timing, location, and rehabilitation program have not yet been finalized,” the team said in a statement announcing the surgery. “Noah is expected to have a full recovery.”
ABOUT THE PISTONS (22-18): Detroit has shown flashes of being the type of team that can compete with the likes of Golden State, Cleveland and Chicago on a regular basis, and the defensive effort on Saturday is something it hopes will carry over more consistently. “There’s no reason why we can’t do this every night,” Johnson told reporters. “We’re working towards this, to do this every night. We bring energy every night. It’s our job as professionals to do that, so now we’ve set the bar for ourselves.” Johnson delivered a steal and one of the Pistons’ 11 blocks on the night while hounding the Warriors on the perimeter.
                BUZZER BEATERS
                1. Bulls G Kirk Hinrich (left quad contusion) left Friday’s game and is day-to-day.
                2. Pistons G Brandon Jennings (jammed ankle) left Saturday’s game and is day-to-day.
                3. Detroit earned a 147-144 win in quadruple overtime in the last meeting on Dec. 18 at Chicago.
                PREDICTION: Pistons 102, Bulls 99

                  Preview: Orlando At Atlanta
When: 5:00 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
                  Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
The Orlando Magic went all the way to London in search of a win but fell in overtime to the Toronto Raptors in front of the foreign fans. The Magic are back in the United States but will still be on the road as they search for their second win in the last eight games when visiting the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.
Orlando is making a habit of falling into early holes and had to battle back from a 31-18 deficit after the first quarter in London to force overtime before eventually falling 106-103 to the Raptors. “One of the main things that we’re trying to convince our guys of is that this is a win-or-lose league,” Magic coach Scott Skiles told reporters. “This is serious business and a man’s sport. Sure, we’ll talk to some guys individually about some things they did well, but our first half was unacceptable.” The Hawks are another team trying to establish some consistency, and they avoided a three-game slide with a 114-86 trouncing of the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday. Atlanta lost by 23 points in Charlotte and fell in overtime at Milwaukee before beginning the two-game homestand with a win, and the team will head back out for four straight after finishing up with Orlando.
TV: 5 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Florida (Orlando), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)
ABOUT THE MAGIC (20-19): Orlando has played one game in the last nine days, giving the team plenty of practice and recovery time surrounding the trip overseas. One of the things the team is working on in practice is integrating Victor Oladipo back into the starting lineup while Elfrid Payton joins the reserves at the point guard spot. Payton returned to the lineup in London after missing the previous four games with a bruised left ankle while Oladipo scored 27 points in the loss and is averaging 20.4 in the last five contests.
ABOUT THE HAWKS (24-17): Atlanta as a team might be battling some inconsistency, but forward Paul Millsap is about as consistent as they come individually. The veteran has scored between 18 and 24 points in each of the last 11 games and went over 10,000 points for his career while pouring in 21 on 8-of-13 shooting in Saturday’s victory. “The word that keeps coming up is consistency, or lack of consistency,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. “We’d like to be better, and I think we’ve shown at times that we can be a very good team.”
                  BUZZER BEATERS
                  1. Oladipo is 18-of-27 from 3-point range over the last five games.
                  2. Hawks sharpshooter Kyle Korver went 0-of-4 from 3-point range on Saturday after knocking down 8-of-15 in the previous three games.
                  3. Oladipo was held to four points on 2-of-11 shooting in a 103-100 home loss to Atlanta on Dec. 20.

                    Preview: Brooklyn At Toronto
When: 7:30 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario
The Toronto Raptors return home for the first time since Jan. 3 when they host Brooklyn on Monday. Following a four-game road trip on American soil, the Raptors upended Orlando in overtime on Thursday in London, pushing their winning streak to four.
Monday’s tilt is the opener of a seven-game homestand for Toronto, which also has a seven-game stretch at Air Canada Centre in the beginning of March. The Raptors dominated the Nets in the previous meeting earlier this month in Brooklyn, as Jonas Valanciunas finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds and the Nets were forced into 19 turnovers. That was part of Brooklyn’s current 1-7 slide, which includes a 114-86 loss at Atlanta on Saturday. Thaddeus Young had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but his teammates went 39.4 percent from the floor as the Nets fell to 4-15 on the road.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), Sportsnet One (Toronto)
ABOUT THE NETS (11-30): Brooklyn has had its share of injury woes already, but it was hit by a pair of physical issues in the loss at Atlanta. Reserve guard Sergey Karasev played just three minutes before departing with a sprained ankle and center Andrea Barngani also had an ankle problem knock him out following 10 minutes. Star center Brook Lopez was limited to 10 points and tied a season low with three rebounds, but he is averaging 20.3 points in his career against Toronto, higher than any other Eastern Conference opponent.
ABOUT THE RAPTORS (25-15): Toronto was outshot from the floor and made one fewer 3-pointer than Orlando, but it survived once again on the strength of its foul shooting. The Raptors – who made 18 more foul shots than the Magic while attempting 23 more – entered Sunday leading the NBA with a plus-4.4 differential in free throws made while ranking second in accuracy (79.6 percent). Kyle Lowry was 12-of-14 versus Orlando and is averaging 21.4 points and 7.4 assists this month.
                    BUZZER BEATERS
                    1. Raptors SG DeMar DeRozan is averaging 27.1 points over his last eight home games.
                    2. Nets SF Joe Johnson is 12-of-18 from 3-point range over the course of a five-game hot stretch.
                    3. The teams have split 78 previous meetings.
                    PREDICTION: Raptors 109, Nets 99

                      Preview: Golden State At Cleveland
When: 8:00 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, Ohio
The Golden State Warriors head into their toughest game yet playing anything but their best basketball as they prepare to visit the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. The Warriors opened the three-game road trip with a loss at Detroit on Saturday and have dropped two of three.
“Struggle” is a relative term for a team with four losses in its first 41 games, but Golden State is in the midst of its worst stretch so far this season. “I think it’s a wake-up call that we got punched, but there have been some signs the past several weeks,” Warriors center Andrew Bogut told reporters after Saturday’s loss. “It just hasn’t been addressed that much because we’ve been winning. We need to pick it up, pick up our intensity and get our defense better.” Golden State should not have any trouble finding intensity in the NBA Finals rematch on Monday, and the Cavaliers are at the top of their game at the moment. Cleveland has won nine of its last 10 games and is coming home after breezing through a 5-1 road trip that closed with a 91-77 domination of the Houston Rockets on Friday.
                      TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (37-4): Harrison Barnes made his return to the starting lineup in Detroit after easing his way back into the rotation off the bench, and the starting frontcourt seemed to struggle to find a rhythm. “Guys were playing hard and cutting and moving, but we weren’t on the same page and didn’t have the same timing,” interim coach Luke Walton told reporters. “The flow we like to play with was missing. It looked a little chaotic.” Barnes and Draymond Green each finished with five points and combined to shoot 3-of-18 from the field.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (28-10): Cleveland is having no trouble finding its timing with guard Kyrie Irving back in the lineup on a regular basis. “I think just being on the road, just together for 12 days just brought us together more,” center Tristan Thompson told ESPN.com. “And you can see it on the court. There’s more flow. Guys are understanding where guys are going to be at.” Irving was playing only his third game back from a fractured kneecap when the Cavaliers went into Golden State on Christmas Day and suffered an 89-83 loss.
                      BUZZER BEATERS
                      1. Cavaliers F Kevin Love has recorded four straight double-doubles.
                      2. Warriors G Stephen Curry has knocked down at least four 3-pointers in each of the last eight games.
                      3. Golden State has not played at Cleveland since winning the clinching Game 6 of the NBA Finals on June 16.
                      PREDICTION: Warriors 96, Cavaliers 94

                        Preview: Boston At Dallas
When: 8:30 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
The Dallas Mavericks attempt to defeat Boston for the seventh consecutive time when they host the Celtics on Monday. Dallas maintained its recent dominance over the Celtics by rallying from an 18-point deficit to post a 106-102 victory in Boston on Nov. 18.
The Celtics have won three consecutive games and opened a three-game road trip with a 119-117 victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Boston ended a three-game road losing streak with the win and is 11-9 away from home. Dallas was annihilated 112-83 by the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday and has lost four of its last six games. “There was a level of frustration but everyone was trying to do the right thing,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said after the whipping. “San Antonio goes hard and they can make you look bad. We got beat and that’s the name of that tune.”
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, CSN New England (Boston), FSN Southwest (Dallas)
ABOUT THE CELTICS (22-19): Point guard Isaiah Thomas scored 32 points in the win over Washington has topped 30 points in three of the past five games. Thomas has made 17 3-pointers while averaging 29.6 points during the stretch, but it isn’t the offensive splurge that is impressing coach Brad Stevens. “He’s just going; he’s got a nice rhythm. We’ve got guys who are looking for him,” Stevens told reporters. “I’m more encouraged by the fact that he’s becoming a good defender. He’s really worked hard on that.”
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (23-19): Forward Dirk Nowitzki had a rare subpar performance against the Spurs and scored a season-low four points on 2-of-10 shooting. “I have to get Dirk better looks — we have to run some things to put him into better positions,” Carlisle said. “I take the blame for that.” The output was Nowitzki’s lowest since the tallied just one point in 10 minutes against the Memphis Grizzlies on Feb. 29, 2012 — a contest he left in the second quarter because of a back injury.
                        BUZZER BEATERS
                        1. The November victory was the Mavericks’ 10th in the past 11 meetings.
                        2. Dallas C Zaza Pachulia is just 4-of-17 from the field over the last two games.
                        3. Boston SF Jae Crowder had 22 points and scored the decisive basket against the Wizards and is averaging 21.3 points in the past four games.
                        PREDICTION: Mavericks 103, Celtics 101

                          Preview: Houston At L.A. Clippers
When: 10:30 PM ET, Monday, January 18, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Clippers saw their 10-game winning streak halted and attempt to start a new one when they host the Houston Rockets on Monday. The Clippers certainly would like to change their fortunes against the Rockets, who ousted Los Angeles from the playoffs last season and have won the first two meetings this season.
The Clippers remain without power forward Blake Griffin (quadriceps) and also didn’t have center DeAndre Jordan (pneumonia) when they suffered a 110-103 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. Jordan has missed two straight games because of the illness and it will be determined Monday whether or not he can return to the lineup. Houston is in the midst of its best stretch of the season with six wins in seven games after rolling to a 112-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. Guard James Harden rebounded from a poor effort in Friday’s loss to Cleveland — 11 points on 2-of-10 shooting — to score 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting against the Lakers.
                          TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE ROCKETS (22-20): Center Dwight Howard has helped fuel Houston’s recent strong play with solid contributions and had 14 points and 15 rebounds Sunday for his ninth straight double-double. “We attacked the basket,” Howard said afterward. “When we attack, we make things happen. We have to continue to do a better job of attacking and putting teams on their heels.” Howard is averaging 18.9 points and 13.4 rebounds and shooting 64.9 percent from the field during his run of double-doubles.
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (26-14): Los Angeles’ winning streak ended due to some soft defense as Sacramento set the tone for its victory with 64 first-half points. The Clippers allow an average of 100.3 points per game and gave up fewer than 100 seven times during the 10-game streak. “We know what we need to stick to every single night,” backup guard Austin Rivers told reporters. “Before, I think we were just guessing, trying to figure it out. Now, we’re comfortable with each other, communication’s stronger. I think those are the biggest steps we’ve taken on defense. We hold each other accountable. When you do that, everybody’s locked in.”
                          BUZZER BEATERS
                          1. The Rockets have won the past four regular-season meetings.
                          2. Houston PG Patrick Beverley (ankle) sat out against the Lakers and is questionable for Monday’s tilt.
                          3. Los Angeles journeyman C Cole Aldrich is averaging 19 points and 8.5 rebounds while starting twice in place of Jordan.
                          PREDICTION: Clippers 108, Rockets 107

                            NBA Betting Roadmap, Week 13
                            by Al McMordie
It’s been 44 years since the NBA has had two teams in the same season, like Golden State and San Antonio, that have smashed their opponents. One has to go back to 1972, when the Bucks (+11.16 ppg) and Lakers (+12.28) were at a level similar to that of the Spurs (+14.21) and Warriors (+11.15). And, like this season, those two teams were both in the Western Conference, so the “de facto” NBA Championship was in the semi-finals, and won by the Lakers, four games to two. We’re still a week away from the first regular season meeting between these two juggernauts, so let’s take a look at what is on the horizon this week.
                            Spread Watch
The San Antonio Spurs are, by most metrics, not only the best team in the league this season, but also the best team “in Vegas.” The Spurs have, by a wide margin, the best point differential (+14.21), the best pointspread differential (+4.72), and the best ATS win percentage (.682). To illustrate just how dominant the Spurs have been, consider that the second-best point differential belongs to Golden State, which trails San Antonio by 3.06 ppg. The second-best pointspread differential is owned by Detroit, which has covered the spread by 2.07 ppg, a whopping 2.65 ppg less than San Antonio’s margin. And the second-best ATS win percentage is Orlando’s .605, significantly less than the Spurs’ .682 mark. To further illustrate how special a season San Antonio is having, consider that the Spurs have only lost back-to-back games against the spread once, and that was back on November 18-20, against the Nuggets and Pelicans. This week, San Antonio will play the Suns and Lakers. And an argument can easily be made that the Suns — and not the 76ers or Lakers — are currently the NBA’s worst team. Phoenix has won just one of its last 14 games, and has been outscored by 13.42 ppg in this stretch. For the season, the Suns have covered just 38% of the time, and have failed to cover the spread by an average of -3.63 ppg. Both of those stats rank dead last in the league! And, lest one think the Spurs might be “overvalued” vs. Phoenix, consider that, since 1991, in the 2nd half of the season, teams have covered 76.1% of the time if they had a total pointspread differential of +6.79 or better (i.e., by how many points a team has covered the spread, relative to its opponent). Also, teams have cashed 65.3% since 1991 in the second-half of the season, if they’ve covered the spread in 26.8% more of their games than their opponent. Look for the Spurs to rout the Suns on Thursday.
                            Total Watch
For years, the Memphis Grizzlies have been marketed as “Grit-N-Grind,” to reflect their defensive-oriented principles and blue-collar attitude. Indeed, over the previous four seasons, Memphis had allowed 92.9, 89.2, 94.5 and 95.0 ppg. And they went ‘under’ the total in 55.6% of their games (195-156 ‘under’). But this season, there’s been very little “grit” on Beale Street, and the Grizzlies have seen their defensive average balloon to 98.7 ppg. Memphis also ranks in the bottom half in defensive efficiency. Last week, Memphis played all four of its games ‘over’ the total, as it gave up 100.2 ppg. This week, the Grizz will play New Orleans, Denver and Minnesota. Each of those three teams ranks in the bottom 10 in defensive efficiency. The game against the Nuggets, especially, looks like a prime game to go ‘over’ the number as the Nuggets also played all of their games last week ‘over’ the total.
                            Injury Watch
On Saturday, the Chicago Bulls announced center Joakim Noah will need surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder. He’s expected to miss the rest of the season. Noah initially injured himself on December 21 against Brooklyn. He returned three weeks later, on January 11, only to get re-injured four days after that vs. Dallas. This is a significant blow for the Bulls. But not just because Noah was averaging 8.8 rebounds a game. It was also widely speculated he would be used as trade bait next month to fetch Chicago additional scoring help. So, with this injury, the Bulls’ hopes on that front are dashed. Additionally, Kirk Hinrich was also injured in that Dallas game, and he’ll miss Monday’s game against the Pistons, at the least. The Bulls are currently on an 0-5 ATS run, and own (along with the Pelicans) the NBA’s second-worst ATS win percentage (.384). With games against Detroit (.578 ATS %), Golden State (.600 ATS %), and Boston (.550 ATS %) on deck this week, it could get much worse before it gets better.
                            Schedule Watch
The Los Angeles Clippers open their week with a big game against Houston, the team which knocked them out of last year’s Playoffs. The Clips have already lost the first two games of this regular season vs. Houston, and have dropped five straight to the Rockets dating back to last season’s Playoffs. Certainly, Los Angeles will desperately want to win this game, on Monday night. Following that, the Clippers will travel to Cleveland on Thursday, and then play without rest the next night, in New York. That Friday game, at the Knicks, looks to be a potential landmine for the Clippers, and especially if LA comes into that game off back to back wins. Over the past 2+ years, the Clippers are 18-24 ATS when playing without rest, including 5-13 ATS off back-to-back wins. Good luck, as always…Al McMordie.
