Mariners acquired RHP Joaquin Benoit from the Padres for RHP Enyel De Los Santos and INF Nelson Ward.
San Diego exercised a $7.5 million option on Benoit nine days ago, and the M's will apparently cover all of it.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox are doing "background work" on Aroldis Chapman.
Rosenthal notes that this indicates a "sincerity of interest" but in no way means a deal is close.

Red Sox acquired RHP Craig Kimbrel from the Padres for OF Manuel Margot, INF Javier Guerra, INF Carlos Asuaje and LHP Logan Allen.
While it won't solve the Red Sox woes in the starting rotation, having a lockdown option in the ninth inning will certainly improve the pitching staff as a whole.

Blue Jays re-signed RHP Marco Estrada to a two-year, $26 million contract.

LHP Brett Anderson has accepted the Dodgers' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer.
He joins Colby Rasmus and Matt Wieters among those that have accepted qualifying offers this offseason.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Tigers are interested in Yovani Gallardo.
Detroit is expected to go after a couple starters this winter, and most anticipate them targeting mid-tier guys. Gallardo would fit the bill after posting a 3.42 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 121/68 K/BB ratio across 33 starts this past season

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the A's have signed Rich Hill to a one-year, $6 million contract pending a physical.

Angels signed INF/OF Cliff Pennington to a two-year, $3.75 million contract.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that David Ortiz will retire after the 2016 season.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today hears that an official announcement will come Wednesday.

Marc Carig of Newsday reports that the Mets have been in touch with the representatives for free agent outfielder Gerardo Parra.
The Mets were connected to Parra at the trade deadline and they are considering him again now that they are looking for a possible platoon partner for Juan Lagares in center field.

Tigers acquired RHP Francisco Rodriguez from the Brewers for INF Javier Betancourt and a player to be named later.
And just like that, the Tigers have found their closer. Rodriguez is still going strong despite an average fastball velocity around 90 mph, posting a 2.21 ERA and 62/11 K/BB ratio over 57 innings this past season.

The Baltimore Sun's Eduardo A. Encina is reporting that the Orioles have been in trade talks regarding Pirates second baseman Neil Walker.

Tigers acquired OF Cameron Maybin and cash considerations from the Braves for LHPs Ian Krol and Gabe Speier.
The deal saves the Braves approximately $6 million. Maybin's coming off one of the best seasons of his career.

The New York Daily News' Mark Feinsand reports that the Yankees and Cubs have discussed a swap of Brett Gardner and Starlin Castro.
A major league executive told Feinsand that "many teams" have engaged in talks (to some degree) regarding Gardner. More specifically, Feinsand wrote that the Cubs and Yankees have spoke about a potential Gardner-for-Castro trade. Now 32, Gardner has three years and $38 million left on his contract.

Blue Jays acquired RHP Jesse Chavez from the Athletics for RHP Liam Hendriks.
Chavez provides much needed depth to the Blue Jays rotation at a very affordable cost.

Blue Jays signed LHP J.A. Happ to a three-year, $36 million contract.
The 33-year-old southpaw, helped by the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, posted a 1.85 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 69/13 K/BB ratio over 63 1/3 innings down the stretch after a mid-season trade to the Pirates.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics are likely to trade Brett Lawrie following the acquisition of Jed Lowrie.
Slusser says the trade for Lowrie "all but ensures" the A's will deal either Lawrie or Danny Valencia, and Lawrie "is considered the better bet to be traded." The report adds that both Lawrie and Valencia "are drawing interest" from American League clubs.

Fox Sports' Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal report the Tigers are in discussions with Jordan Zimmermann.
Morosi and Rosenthal are hearing from multiple sources that the talks have become serious. Detroit is looking for an ace after losing Max Scherzer last offseason and David Price at the trade deadline. Zimmermann is among the top arms in this year's free agent class and should earn a nine-figure deal when all is said and done.

Fox Sports' Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal reported late Saturday that talks between the two sides were heating up and they've now apparently crossed the finish line. There's no word yet on the details of the deal, but Zimmermann was widely expected to cross the $100 million threshold with his deal.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Ben Zobrist is the Mets' "No. 1 target" this offseason.
It's not surprising, as they've been connected to him since early on in the offseason. Rosenthal notes that the Nationals, Braves and Giants, among other clubs, are also in on Zobrist. The reports adds that the market for Zobrist is "likely to become more defined in next few days" and "willingness to guarantee a fourth year likely will be a deciding factor.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Chris Young will receive $13 million guaranteed in his new two-year contract with the Red Sox.
The Red Sox have yet to make an official announcement, but CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Monday that the two sides had agreed to a two-year deal. Young batted .252 with 14 home runs and a .773 OPS in part-time role with the Yankees this past season and figures to be used as a fourth-outfielder/platoon-type in Boston.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox and David Price have agreed to a seven-year, $217 million contract.
New general manager Dave Dombrowski was dead-set on getting an ace this winter, and he's locked up the best one on the market to a record-setting contract. The deal just barely edges out Clayton Kershaw's contract for the highest ever for a pitcher and is the seventh-richest contract for any player in history
