Preview: Trail Blazers (24-27) at Rockets (27-25)

    Date: February 06, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

Houston Rockets interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff is confident his team won't get caught looking ahead to the All-Star break.

While James Harden may ponder next weekend's festivities as the Rockets' lone All-Star, he certainly won't look past a couple of matchups with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Harden looks to bounce back from one of his worst offensive showings of the season Saturday against a Trail Blazers team he routinely torments.

The Rockets (27-25) started slowly Thursday against slumping Phoenix, trailing 20-5 midway through the first quarter before scoring 37 in the second period en route to a 111-105 win. Corey Brewer had a season-high 24 points and Trevor Ariza added 22 as Houston scored a season-best 38 points off 24 turnovers.

Winners of two in a row following a three-game losing streak, Bickerstaff isn't worried about the Rockets thinking about their approaching week-long break.

"Mental toughness, the ability to focus, understanding how important each game is for us, won't allow us to do those things," Bickerstaff said. "We trust our guys to do the right things and prepare themselves the right way. We go into the All-Star break Thursday and we won't allow - they won't allow themselves - to do anything otherwise."

After this game, the Rockets won't play at home again until Feb. 27 against San Antonio. They visit Golden State on Tuesday and Portland (24-27) the next night before resuming a five-game road stretch after the break with Phoenix, Utah and the Trail Blazers again.

Harden probably has the dates with Portland circled.

Since joining the Rockets before the 2012-13 season, his 32.8 points per game against the Blazers are the most by any player.

He has four 40-point games in his last five matchups, tallying 45 in this season's first meeting, a 108-103 overtime win Nov. 18 that tipped off hours after the unexpected firing of Kevin McHale. He had all nine of Houston's points in the extra session after scoring 17 in the fourth quarter.

Harden had 17 points - 10.7 below his average - on 4-for-19 shooting Thursday, as he failed to score in the first quarter for the first time this season.

Rebounding from an off night hasn't been a problem for the four-time All-Star, as Harden is averaging 33.9 points in the games immediately following the seven prior times he's scored fewer than 20.

Portland has a dynamic scorer of its own in Damian Lillard, who had 15 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter Thursday against Toronto. However, it wasn't enough in a 110-103 loss that snapped a season-high five-game winning streak.

Lillard, who added 11 assists, has been in a bit of a shooting slump from 3-point range, though, going 6 of 31 in the last five games. He went 10 for 10 from the free-throw line but made 1 of 6 3-point tries and shot 6 of 19 at Houston in November, totaling 23 points and six turnovers.

Lillard and Harden are among the league leaders in turnovers with Lillard at 3.3 per game and Harden averaging 4.4.

The Blazers are on the road for the first time since Jan. 18 after going 5-2 on a homestand and have won four of six away from Portland. They started the season 5-14 on the road.

"It doesn't get any easier. James Harden and Memphis (on Monday), going into their house. That's going to be tough," guard C.J. McCollum said. "The schedule is swinging back to stronger teams, upper-echelon teams and we got to compete every night."

Preview: Wizards (22-26) at Hornets (24-26)

      Date: February 06, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

As disappointing as their latest result was, the Charlotte Hornets might have gotten something from it that could help them flourish against some key opponents heading into the All-Star break.

Nicolas Batum is coming off his best game in three weeks, though whether he holds up in the tail end of a back-to-back set Saturday night against the visiting Washington Wizards remains to be seen.

The Charlotte shooting guard has played the last two games but missed four of the previous six with a toe injury. After being limited to 5.8 points on 21.8 percent shooting and 21.4 from 3-point range in his past six games, Batum scored 21 points on 7 of 12 and 4 of 7 from long range in Friday's 98-95 home loss to Miami.

The Hornets (24-26) led at a timeout with 33 seconds left before faltering in the closing seconds to end a two-game winning streak, and while two late turnovers might have changed the outcome, they also got strong individual efforts from Marvin Williams and Kemba Walker to hang their hat on.

Williams had a season-high 27 points - his top scoring effort since 2011-12 - and is averaging 20.5 points on 62.7 percent shooting in his last four games. The forward had scored 9.7 points and shot 40.9 percent in his first 46 games.

Walker missed Wednesday's 106-97 home win over Cleveland with a knee injury but returned to score 20 points and hit 4 of 8 from 3-point range after being limited to 13.0 points on 7-of-27 shooting in his previous two contests.

Even so, coach Steve Clifford said there wasn't nearly enough from the team as a whole.

"You can't have that many guys go into the game ill-prepared mentally," said Clifford, whose bench scored 12 points on 4-of-20 shooting.

They now need to win three straight to enter the break over .500. Those games come at home against Washington and Chicago before closing the first half at Indiana - all teams they figure to compete with for playoff positioning in the second half.

The Wizards have won three of the last four meetings, including a 109-101 home win on Dec. 19 with John Wall scoring 27 points with 12 assists.

Washington (22-26) will be trying to win consecutive games for the first time since a four-game streak from Jan. 9-15. The Wizards are coming off Friday's 106-94 home win over Philadelphia, but it's part of a 3-7 span on which opponents have scored 111.7 points per game while shooting 48.3 percent and 42.9 from long range.

The 12-point win wasn't necessarily indicative of the way the game went with the Wizards jumping out to a 38-18 lead after the first quarter. Wall had 18 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his first triple-double since April 9, 2014, against the Hornets. It was a solid encore performance to his 41-point effort in Wednesday's 134-121 loss to Golden State, and the point guard is shooting 65.2 percent in the last two games following a five-game span at 33.3.

"The 13 rebounds I really like just from a standpoint of getting back in there and helping," said Randy Wittman, who was coaching his first game back after missing the previous two for his brother's funeral. "We end up winning the rebounding game tonight because of that."

Against the 76ers, Bradley Beal led with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting in his first start since Dec. 9, which was followed by a 16-game layoff with a stress reaction in his right leg before returning to come off the bench for eight games before Friday.

Preview: Pistons (27-24) at Pacers (26-24)

        Date: February 06, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Stanley Johnson embraced his role as a rookie coming off the bench in coach Stan Van Gundy's rotation and saw his minutes begin to increase toward the end of January.

Now he's making the most of his opportunity to start with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sidelined.

Johnson looks to help the Detroit Pistons win for the third time in four games and even the season series with the host Indiana Pacers at two apiece Saturday night.

Caldwell-Pope's 14.6 points per game ranks third for Detroit (27-24), but a core muscle strain suffered in Wednesday's loss at Boston ended his consecutive games-played streak at 208 and will keep him out until at least after the All-Star break.

Johnson made his second start of the season Thursday against New York in Caldwell-Pope's place and finished with a season-high 22 points and nine rebounds while going 7 of 12 from the field in a 111-105 victory.

The 19-year-old averaged 8.2 points in roughly 22 minutes through his first 45 games, but he's averaging 15.2 in about 31 minutes over the last six. He's expected to start at least the next three before the break.

"I knew I was going to walk into heavy minutes," Johnson said. "For me going into the game, I was like, 'How do I keep up (Caldwell-Pope's) defensive intensity. Offensively we don't play the same, so I knew I wouldn't be able to do it in his way, but I thought I could help out on both sides."

Reggie Jackson scored 21 points and praised Johnson for stepping up in an unfamiliar role. Andre Drummond finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons, who blew a 27-point lead before Anthony Tolliver's 3-pointer with 1:47 left put them ahead for good.

'None of them will admit it, but there was more than one guy in there who thought the game was over at the half,' Van Gundy said. "If you don't play hard in the NBA, that kind of stuff can happen, and luckily we got out of there with a win.'

Drummond had 25 points and a career-high 29 rebounds - the most in the league since Andrew Bynum had 30 boards April 11, 2012 - in the first meeting with Indiana on Nov. 3. The Pistons lost 94-82, though, and fell by that same score in the last matchup Jan. 2.

Paul George finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds in last month's win as the Pacers (26-24) held the Pistons to 35.5 percent from the field.

George had a solid effort Friday with 31 points, nine boards and six assists while going 11 of 21 from the field in Indiana's 102-96 loss at Atlanta. He averaged only 14.5 points while shooting 30.5 percent over his previous four, but the Pacers went 3-1 in that stretch.

Indiana fell to 6-11 when George attempts at least 20 shots despite him averaging 31.6 points in those games. He attempted fewer in each of the previous four.

The Pacers lost Friday even with a 53-32 edge on the glass.

'Our bigs did a great job of rebounding,' George said. 'It's hard to make plays when they're getting whacked all day, but it's another game that we should have had - one that we didn't do so late in the game and put it away.'

Center Ian Mahinmi has missed the last four with lower back soreness, but coach Frank Vogel said "there's a good chance" he'll play against Detroit.

Preview: Pelicans (18-31) at Cavaliers (35-14)

          Date: February 06, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

Now that they've asserted themselves on offense under Tyronn Lue, the Cleveland Cavaliers may want to get back to defense given recent results and a nagging injury.

With Kevin Love hoping to play through a bruised left thigh, the Cavaliers will try to end a two-game skid Saturday night against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Although it boasts the offensive talents of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Love, Cleveland (35-14) had been winning primarily with defense under David Blatt.

In their 41 games under Blatt through Jan. 21, the Cavaliers tied Miami for the second-fewest points allowed per game at 95.7. Although they've bumped their own average to 106.8 in Lue's up-tempo system, the defense has given up 102.6 in those eight games.

The new focus has created some big swings. Cleveland has led by double digits six times under Lue but has let several opponents close the gap, including Boston on Friday. The Celtics trailed by 15 but won 104-103 on Avery Bradley's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Cavs, who threw the game away by missing 14 of their 35 free throws, lost Love when he had to be helped off the court in the third quarter, but he's hoping rest and treatment will allow him to play Saturday.

"(Marcus) Smart hit me on the box out and I went right to the floor," said Love, who separated his shoulder against Boston in last season's playoffs. "For 10 minutes it was just dead leg. I'm optimistic it's just a thigh bruise. Nothing else."

The loss opened a five-game homestand for the Eastern Conference leaders, who have a good opportunity to re-establish their defense with 10 of their next 13 games at home.

With Love hobbled in the frontcourt or perhaps sidelined, Anthony Davis should get plenty of touches for New Orleans (18-31). Even with a healthy Love in the lane Dec. 4, the All-Star forward had one of his best games of the season in a 114-108 overtime victory. Davis shot 13 of 22 and finished with 31 points, 12 rebounds and four steals.

James had another big game against the Pelicans with 37 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, but his gaudy numbers in the series haven't meant much. The four-time MVP has averaged 36.7 points and shot 55.7 percent in his last three against New Orleans, but Cleveland has lost two of those games.

The Pelicans, who rank in the NBA's top 10 at 102.4 points per game, enjoyed a 7-2 stretch to close January but are now riding a three-game losing streak after a listless 99-96 home loss to the West-worst Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

New Orleans missed eight of its first nine shots and trailed 13-2 just four minutes into the game, and coach Alvin Gentry said afterward that his team played "selfishly" on offense and failed to lock in defensively.

Davis shot 16 of 25 with 39 points and 11 rebounds for New Orleans, which missed several easy baskets, went 14 for 26 on free throws and 4 of 20 from 3-point range.

"When we have as many breakdowns as we did, when we miss free throws, miss defensive assignments, we give them a chance to stay in the game and then they start getting confidence and feel like they can win," said Davis, whose team dropped to 0-4 this season when he scores 36 or more. "That's what happened tonight and they won."

Pelicans guard Tyreke Evans missed his fifth straight game with right knee soreness and there's still no timetable for his return.

            Preview: Nets (13-38) at 76ers (7-43)

            Date: February 06, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Brooklyn Nets have won back-to-back games just twice this season. The most recent instance came two months ago against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Joe Johnson and the Nets look to build on their best performance of the season and beat the 76ers again in a matchup of two of the NBA's worst teams Saturday night.

The only thing preventing Brooklyn (13-38) from being at the bottom of the Atlantic Division is league-worst Philadelphia (7-43).

The Nets have looked worthy of that status while dropping 15 of 17 games, but they halted a five-game skid with Friday's 128-119 win over Sacramento. In a rare positive performance during an otherwise dismal season, they set season highs in points, shooting percentage (55.8) and 3-pointers (18).

"It feels great to get a win, to see everything clicking on all cylinders," said Johnson, who had season bests of 27 points and 11 assists while sinking 11 of 16 from the field, including 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.

The small forward had 20 points and nine assists while making 7 of 12 from the floor and 4 of 5 from long range in a 114-100 loss to Indiana two days earlier.

Johnson and the Nets will now try to win two straight games for the first time since following a win over Houston with a 100-91 victory against Philadelphia on Dec. 10, but it will require ending a five-game road losing streak. Brooklyn, though, has won eight of the last 10 matchups with the 76ers, including three straight in Philadelphia.

Thaddeus Young had 21 points and nine rebounds in a 94-87 win in the most recent visit March 14. He was vital again two months ago, scoring 18 points with 11 boards.

The 76ers have surrendered an average of 112.0 points while losing four in a row. They allowed Washington to shoot 52.4 percent from the floor and never recovered from a 20-point first-quarter deficit in Friday's 106-94 road defeat.

"We have been down a lot for the past 2 1/2 years. That area isn't shocking to us," coach Brett Brown said. "How we respond to it is the great challenge and I'm proud of our guys way more than I'm not."

Ish Smith had 22 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals against the Wizards, two nights after he had seven points and as many assists in a 124-86 home loss to Atlanta. The journeyman guard shot 3 of 10 and finished with nine points in a 94-87 loss to the Nets in the most recent matchup in Philadelphia.

Jahlil Okafor had 22 points and 10 rebounds at Brooklyn, but he only had nine and four Friday. The rookie is averaging 10.7 points over the last three games after missing two with an illness.

Isaiah Canaan has averaged 15.7 points off the bench over the last three games after scoring 18 at Washington. However, the guard had four points while missing all six of his 3-point attempts against the Nets two months ago.

Preview: Mavericks (28-25) at Grizzlies (30-20)

              Date: February 06, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies are on their longest winning streak in a year, while the Dallas Mavericks are trying to avoid their longest slide over that same time frame.

The Grizzlies try to win for the 10th time in 11 games and send the Mavericks to a fourth straight defeat Saturday night.

Memphis (30-20) has won five in a row for the first time since taking eight straight from Jan. 21-Feb. 4, 2015. The Grizzlies are averaging 106.6 points during the run, a marked improvement from their 97.5 season mark.

They overcame a subpar shooting effort Friday, making 43.4 percent from the floor - 4 of 18 from 3-point range - in a 91-85 victory at New York.

"I thought we did a good job of just playing within ourselves," point guard Mike Conley said. "We didn't get too crazy. We didn't turn the ball over. We made free throws. Those are things that you got to do."

Conley had eight points and nine assists against the Knicks, giving him averages of 11.8 and 7.8 in eight games after sitting out six with a sore left Achilles.

"I am getting better," Conley said. "I am not all the way 100 percent. I am trying to adjust, get into basketball shape, get to the All-Star break and get a little bit of rest."

Before that, Memphis will try to capitalize on a meeting with the Mavericks (28-25), who have lost three straight while yielding 107.0 points and 48.4 percent shooting.

The Mavericks last dropped four in a row from Jan. 23-28, 2015, a stretch that included a 109-90 home loss to the Grizzlies.

Dallas has split two season matchups with Memphis, winning the most recent 97-88 at home on Dec. 18.

The Mavericks will need to be much better than they were Friday against San Antonio if they are to end Memphis' six-game home win streak. They only scored 26 first-half points and trailed the Spurs by a team-record 36 at the break before losing 116-90.

"We had a bad night, but we're going to have to flush it and get ready for (Saturday)," coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official website.

Dallas is 2-10 against winning teams since beating Golden State without Stephen Curry on Dec. 20.

A better effort from Dirk Nowitzki - the team leader with 17.6 points per game - is imperative. He had 10 points Friday after totaling 46 over the two previous games.

He scored 20 against the Grizzlies in December, but he's averaging 15.3 on 35.6 percent shooting - 4 of 15 from behind the arc - over the last three visits to Memphis.

Chandler Parsons is also seeking improvement after totaling 18 points and missing 15 of 22 shots over the last two games. He had 16 points, seven boards and six assists at home against the Grizzlies.

Parsons will try again to slow down Memphis' Jeff Green, who missed all seven of his shots and finished with two points in December's meeting. However, he enters this matchup averaging 24.0 points and 5.4 rebounds in the last five games.

The Grizzlies have been one of the league's best teams on the second of back to backs, winning eight of 10 to trail only San Antonio and Golden State.

Preview: Bulls (27-22) at Timberwolves (15-36)

                Date: February 06, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Don't blame Chicago Bulls fans for thinking the worst when Jimmy Butler was being rolled off the floor in a chair after a hard fall. They've had plenty of experience watching another star suffer serious injuries.

The early diagnosis says Butler's setback isn't in that category, which is some good news for the already banged-up Bulls as they continue their trip against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

Memories of Derrick Rose tearing his ACL and then his meniscus - injuries that held the former MVP out for nearly two full seasons - surely crept into the minds of those watching Butler being wheeled off the court in Friday's 115-110 loss to Denver.

Butler, who missed Wednesday's win over Sacramento with left knee tendinitis and was questionable against the Nuggets, came down hard after a drive to the basket in the second quarter. He stayed to shoot the free throws, then was helped back to the locker room.

The All-Star guard was averaging a team-high 22.4 points entering Friday and had 19 before going down. The Bulls are calling the injury a sprain in the same knee after the initial checkup.

A more serious injury would be devastating for the Bulls (27-22), who already lost Joakim Noah for the season and have yet to activate Mike Dunleavy Jr. because of injuries. Nikola Mirotic also has missed the last five with Appendicitis.

"We've got to be prepared to play without Jimmy for a time," said coach Fred Hoiberg, who confirmed Butler will have an MRI in Minnesota early Saturday. "At the same time, we don't want to jump to any conclusions. The ligament seems stable."

Chicago blew an 18-point lead while playing most of the game sans Butler and the entire contest without Pau Gasol, who suffered a left hand sprain against Sacramento.

Rose finished with 30 points, a season-high nine rebounds and seven assists while Taj Gibson added 18 for the Bulls, who were outscored 42-21 in the fourth quarter and fell to 2-3 on their seven-game trip.

"Right now we're taking it all in," Rose said. "If (Butler) can't play, the guys behind him will have to come in and play good. He seemed in good spirits."

Gasol might be able to return against Minnesota (15-36), which opens a three-game homestand after snapping a five-game skid with Wednesday's 108-102 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Andrew Wiggins finished with 31 points after scoring 30 the previous night against the Lakers, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 and 12 rebounds. Gorgui Dieng had his third double-double in four games and is averaging 16.3 points over his last six.

'We're gaining confidence every day,' Wiggins said. 'We may lose, but we're not getting beaten bad and we're not getting blown out. We're fighting back and never giving up.'

The Timberwolves are also dealing with injuries. Veterans Kevin Garnett (sore right knee) and Kevin Martin (sore right wrist) each have missed the last six, and Nikola Pekovic has been out for the last two with a sore right foot.

Coach Sam Mitchell, though, has been pleased with how the younger players have taken advantage of more playing time and continue to progress.

"I'm excited every day because I can see the potential, I can see where we're going to go," Mitchell said. "Our young guys are on the court every night and they're either winning or giving themselves a chance. What better do you want?"

Wiggins scored 31 points to help overcome 21 and 14 rebounds from Gasol in Minnesota's 102-93 overtime win at Chicago on Nov. 7.

The Bulls have won six straight at Minnesota since an overtime loss on Jan. 25, 2009.

Preview: Lakers (11-41) at Spurs (42-8)

                  Date: February 06, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

If Kobe Bryant ever took the time to contemplate his final trip to San Antonio, the current state of the Spurs is probably the way he drew it up.

The future Hall of Famer may have also pictured his Los Angeles Lakers perched on a similar plateau and ready to go at it one last time in the regular season before a postseason matchup that was once an expected encounter in the NBA playoffs.

The fact that Saturday night will play out without that kind of drama might make the farewell that much more memorable in a city that's home to one of his greatest rivals.

If there's any positive to his San Antonio farewell, it's that Bryant has turned in three strong games leading into it. The Spurs (42-8) won 116-90 in Dallas on Friday for their third straight, but the bigger news is that the Lakers (11-41) won 99-96 in New Orleans on Thursday and are in position to match San Antonio's streak.

Bryant had 27 points, and in three games since missing two of three with a sore shoulder, his numbers might be confused with a stretch from, say, 2007: 29.3 points per game while hitting 15 of 30 from 3-point range.

Suffering through a lost season is beginning to have its positives.

"I wasn't going to quit," Bryant said. "At the end of the season, if these games never came around, I could look myself in the mirror and be comfortable with the fact that I tried everything."

His coach sounds less surprised about him reaching this point.

"He's finally got his legs back," Byron Scott told the team's website. "When you play 20 years in this league, sometimes it takes a while to get them back, and obviously right now, the last couple of weeks he seems to have everything up under him again."

The teams will meet one last time in Los Angeles on Feb. 19, but no matter how the last two shake out, he'll come up short against the Spurs. Bryant has faced San Antonio more than any team and gone 43-46, including the postseason and a 18-27 road record.

Then again, you might call it a draw because of what happened when it mattered most. The Lakers and Spurs have met in seven postseasons in Bryant's career, and Los Angeles won four of those series and was swept in 2013 when he didn't play.

This season hasn't even been close with San Antonio winning the first two meetings by an average of 27.5 points while limiting Bryant to 8.5 on 33.3 percent shooting. The Spurs have won three straight and 15 of the last 18 meetings, including the 2013 sweep.

Bryant's main contemporary still might not be ready to go. Tim Duncan, who entered the league a season after Bryant, has missed the last six games with a knee injury and could remain out until after the All-Star break.

The Spurs have found a formula after dropping two of the first three without Duncan. Friday's win was their 14th by 25-plus points, which leads Golden State by eight.

"Guys are just locked in," said LaMarcus Aldridge, who has averaged 23.6 points on 61.8 percent shooting in his last five.

And so is one of the greats from the storied franchise they'll face next.

"I knew the amount of training that I had put in over the summertime. I mean, I worked like crazy," the 37-year-old Bryant said. "It becomes more frustrating because you're not seeing those results.

"It becomes: 'Maybe this is what happens (when you're older). You put all the work in and still there's nothing to show for it and you can't do anything about it.' And I had to be really stubborn and say, 'No. You've got to continue to stay with the process,' as I always have, and see what happens."

Let's see what happens one more time. San Antonio is the only Western Conference city where Bryant has never had a 40-point regular-season game.

Preview: Jazz (24-25) at Suns (14-37)

                    Date: February 06, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Utah and Phoenix didn't appear so different heading into their first meeting a month and a half ago, but that winter solstice contest foreshadowed the Suns' dark days ahead.

There's no sign of improvement heading into Saturday night's home game against the Jazz, who will try to extend their season-best win streak with more stingy defense.

Prior to their Dec. 21 meeting, Utah was 11-14 and Phoenix 12-17. Including that 110-89 win and a victory three days before, the Jazz have gone 14-11 and put themselves in the playoff discussion. Dating to the Suns' game the day before, they're a league-worst 2-21, and every other NBA team has at least five wins in that time.

Utah (24-25) concluded a six-game homestand with Friday's 84-81 win over Milwaukee, giving it a five-game streak entering a four-game road span straddling the All-Star break. The Jazz are in position to reach the .500 mark for the first time since being 10-10 entering play Dec. 11.

The streak has featured wins by an average of 11.6 points because the Jazz have limited opponents to 84.2 on 41.4 percent shooting and 27.3 from 3-point range. The returns of Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors from extended injuries have had an impact, but coach Quin Snyder also credited wings Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood.

"The challenge, especially for Gordon and Rodney, is to not rest on the help side," Snyder said. "If they're guarding the ball, you're engaged. But when you get on the help side, as much work they're doing in other aspects of the game, there's a tendency just to kind of relax. I think we've been doing a better job fighting that."

The last two, however, haven't come easily with Utah scoring 84.5 points with shooting marks of 41.7 and 26.5, though Hood managed 23 points versus the Bucks. The guard has averaged 20.5 and shot 44.4 percent from 3-point range over the past eight games, but Snyder implied he'd like to see some stronger team numbers.

"I think we're an offensive juggernaut. We've scored over 80 in two straight games," Snyder told the team's official website.

Hayward had 24 points in the December win over Phoenix and has averaged 23.3 while shooting 50.0 percent in four split meetings since the start of last season.

The Suns (14-37) are quickly dipping to the bottom of the Western Conference with only the Los Angeles Lakers between them and the cellar. After Thursday's 111-105 home loss to Houston, they've dropped at least six straight for the third time during their 23-game tailspin, including the first two of a seven-game homestand.

The six-point loss to the Rockets was their closest game since last winning Jan. 23 - a 98-95 home win over Atlanta - but Phoenix shot 38.6 percent and had 24 turnovers.

Alex Len had 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Archie Goodwin had a team-high 22 points, but the guard committed six turnovers. Any offensive promise he's shown in eight starts with Brandon Knight out has been compromised by his struggles taking care of the ball. The 21-year-old has averaged 16.4 points in those games but also 4.25 turnovers.

"It's small things I'm not doing like getting to the outlet fast enough," Goodwin said. "I see the pass and sometimes I just throw it too hard or I don't drop it in the right spot. ... I'll get better at it."

He might have three more games to get it down with Knight possibly sidelined through the All-Star break due to a groin injury.

Preview: Thunder (38-13) at Warriors (45-4)

                      Date: February 06, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

While there's two weeks of hype before the Super Bowl, more than a week of build-up for an NBA regular-season game is rare.

That's the unusual case Saturday night, because a relatively innocuous comment by MVP Stephen Curry has added some spice to the Golden State Warriors' first matchup of the season against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Curry and Russell Westbrook each turned in huge efforts before their first meeting of the season in the second-most anticipated sporting event in the Bay Area this weekend, with the Warriors seeking a 41st straight regular-season home win.

Golden State (45-4) matched the 40-game home streak in the regular season by Orlando from March 21, 1995-March 19, 1996 in its last home game, routing Dallas 127-107 on Jan. 27. The only longer such streak was 44 by Chicago from March 30, 1995-April 4, 1996.

The next day, Curry, who grew up in Charlotte, was asked about Super Bowl weekend in the Bay Area and if the huge Carolina Panthers fan planned to attend the game against the Denver Broncos one day after this contest. He said he would.

"It'll be a good 48 hours, a win and a win," Curry said.

The day after that, reporters at Oklahoma City's practice asked the Thunder (38-13) for their reaction.

Westbrook rolled his eyes and said, "Anybody else got any other questions?"

Kevin Durant responded, "I don't pay attention to (stuff) like that."

There will be even more intrigue for this game with rumors swirling that Durant might join Golden State as a free agent this summer.

"Who knows what will happen?" Curry said. "Where he'll ends up only Kevin knows that."

These teams haven't played since Wednesday, when Curry, Westbrook and Durant showcased their star power.

Curry matched a career high with 11 3-pointers and scored 51 in Wednesday's 134-121 victory at Washington, one day before he and the Warriors met with President Obama.

Durant's 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left was the winner in a 117-114 home victory over the Magic. Westbrook posted his third straight triple-double and 27th of his career with 24 points, a career-high 19 rebounds and 14 assists.

Curry leads the NBA with 29.8 points per game with Durant third at 27.4. The Oklahoma City leading scorer has felt slighted with the attention showered on Golden State and San Antonio this season, although he insists his focus is on his club, which is in third place in the Western Conference.

"We've still got to play the games at the end of the day," Durant said. "It's not like they're canceling our games, they're not talking about us in the media, we've still got to play our games."

These teams go into the weekend ranking as the two best in points per 100 possessions, with Golden State at 113.2 and Oklahoma City at 110.0. The difference is while the Warriors average a league-best 20.7 assists per 100 possessions, the Thunder are at 16.5 due to the isolation talents of Durant and Westbrook.

That's a notion at which the Thunder bristle.

"My teammates and myself, we've been doing a great job of locking in on each other and how we can be better and areas we can improve in," Durant said.

The Warriors are scoring 123.0 points during their eight-game win streak. Klay Thompson has averaged 33.8 points and 60.2 percent shooting in his last four.

The Thunder are also red hot as winners of 12 of 13. They're averaging 120.2 points in a five-game win streak.

This is the first of three meetings this season after Golden State took three of four in 2014-15.

NBA notebook: Sixers pay tribute to Dawkins
                        By The Sports Xchange

The Philadelphia 76ers will honor the late NBA legend Darryl Dawkins with a special tribute night on Saturday when the Sixers host the Brooklyn Nets.
The 6-foot-11 Dawkins, known as "Chocolate Thunder" because of his powerful dunks, died of a heart attack on Aug. 27 at age 58.
"Darryl Dawkins Tribute Night" will be highlighted by a special halftime ceremony featuring live interviews with former Sixers teammates Bobby Jones and World B. Free.
Dawkins' legend swelled in 1979 when he twice shattered backboards with his rim-rattling dunks. He appeared in 726 games (232 starts) for Philadelphia, New Jersey, Detroit and Utah and averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game. His 57.2 career field-goal percentage ranks eighth in NBA history.

---The Phoenix Suns signed NBA Developmental League all-star guard Orlando Johnson to a 10-day contract on Friday.
Johnson has spent this season with Austin in the D-League and averaged 15.2 points in 28 games. He was named to the all-star team on Jan. 29. The two-year NBA veteran played for the Indiana Pacers in 2012-13 and the Sacramento Kings in 2013-14. In 96 NBA games, Johnson has averaged 3.2 points and 1.7 rebounds, with a career high of 15 points for the Pacers in a 2013 game against the Atlanta Hawks.
Johnson also spent last season with Austin, averaging 17.4 points in 43 games, and previously played professionally in Spain and the Philippines.

---A Jan. 23 game between the Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards that was postponed because of heavy snow last month has been rescheduled for Feb. 18.
The rescheduled date will be the first game for both teams after the NBA All-Star Game break.

NBA Odds: Saturday, February 6 2016 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
                          by Alan Matthews

Many around the NBA think that the team with the best chance to beat the Golden State Warriors in this year's playoffs is not the San Antonio Spurs but the Oklahoma City Thunder. That's because obviously OKC has two of the best players/scorers in the NBA in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and they are capable of matching Steph Curry point-for-point. But mostly it's because the Thunder also can thrive playing small-ball, and that's what makes Golden State nearly unbeatable. That's why I will be parked on the couch Saturday night (9 p.m. ET) for the lone national TV NBA game of Saturday (ESPN) as Oklahoma City visits Golden State in the first matchup of the season between these teams. The Warriors put their 40-game regular-season home winning streak on the line. With the Super Bowl being held down the road on Sunday, there should be a huge amount of celebrities at this game.

Trail Blazers at Rockets (-5, 213.5)

Portland's five-game winning streak ended in a 110-103 home loss to Toronto on Thursday. Damian Lillard had 27 points and 11 assists, while CJ McCollum added 21 points for Portland. The team was without starting forward Noah Vonleh due to an ankle injury. Maurice Harkless, who almost never plays even a minute, got a surprise start in his place. Houston won a second in a row on Thursday, 111-105 in Phoenix. Corey Brewer scored a season high 24 points and Trevor Ariza 22 to lead the Rockets. James Harden was just 4-for-17 from the field. Houston beat Portland 108-103 in OT in Houston on Nov. 18 behind 45 points from Harden. The Rockets outscored the Blazers by 15 in the fourth quarter. Houston has won five of its past six games against the Trail Blazers. Harden has at least 40 in four of the past five in series.

Key trends: The Blazers are 5-2 against the spread in their past seven in Houston. The "over/under" is 12-2 in the past 14 in Houston.

                          Early lean: Rockets and over.

                          Wizards at Hornets (TBA)

Washington hosted Philly on Friday, while Charlotte was home to Miami. The Hornets weren't sure if point guard Kemba Walker was to miss a second straight game. Walker thought he would play after practicing Thursday. These teams have split two meetings this season, each winning at home by at least eight points. The game in Charlotte finished 101-87 on Nov. 25.

Key trends: The Wizards are 2-7 ATS in the past nine meetings. The under is 8-2 in the past 10.

Early lean: Hornets if Walker plays.

                          Pistons at Pacers (-4, 204.5)

Indiana was in Atlanta on Friday. Detroit beat the visiting Knicks 111-105 on Thursday despite blowing a 27-point lead. But the Pistons learned that starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will be out through the All-Star break with a core muscle strain. He's averaging 14.6 points this season. This is the final meeting of the season between the teams. The Pacers lead 2-1, winning the home game 94-82 on Jan. 2 behind 32 points from Paul George. He and Marcus Morris scuffled a bit at the end so keep an eye on that here.

Key trends: The home team is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The over is 8-3 in the past 11.

                          Early lean: Pistons and over.

                          Pelicans at Cavaliers (-11, 208.5)

Cleveland hosted Boston on Friday. New Orleans dropped a third in a row Thursday, 99-96 at home to the sorry Lakers. The Pelicans have been held under 100 points in each loss. Anthony Davis had 39 points and 11 rebounds in the Laker loss. Jrue Holiday missed a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer. New Orleans was just 16-for-26 from the free-throw line. Tyreke Evans missed a fifth straight game, and don't expect him here. The Pelicans won the first meeting, 114-108 on OT on Dec. 4 in the Big Easy. LeBron James led all scorers with 37 points, including 23 in the fourth quarter to erase a 13-point Pelican lead and get the game to OT. Davis had 31 points and 12 rebounds.

Key trends: The home team is 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings. The over is 6-1 in those seven.

                          Early lean: Cavaliers and over.

                          Nets at 76ers (pick'em, 202.5)

Philly was in Washington on Friday, while Brooklyn hosted the Kings. Brooklyn and Philly are clearly the two worst teams in the East, but at least the 76ers have a plan, their first-round pick in this year's draft and some good young players. The Nets don't have any of those. Brooklyn won the first meeting at home, 100-91 on Dec. 10.

Key trends: The Nets are 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The under is 6-0-1 in the previous seven.

Early lean: Wow, Sixers might be favored by tipoff! And I'll take them.

                          Mavericks at Grizzlies (-4, 196)

Dallas was home to San Antonio on Friday without Deron Williams, while Memphis was in New York. The Mavs and Grizzlies have split two meetings, each winning at home. The game in Memphis was Nov. 24, and the Grizz rolled 110-96. Mike Conley scored 21 points to lead seven Grizzlies in double figures. Dirk Nowitzki had 14 points and 10 boards in the loss.

Key trends: The Mavs are 5-2 ATS in the past seven in Memphis. The over is 4-1 in the previous five there.

                          Early lean: Grizzlies and over.

                          Bulls at Timberwolves (TBA)

Chicago was in Denver on Friday night with both Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol questionable. It does appear like the team will see the season debut of small forward Mike Dunleavy on Saturday, however. He had offseason back surgery and then a bit of a setback in rehab. Minnesota had a stunning win at the Clippers on Wednesday, 108-102. The Wolves had lost five straight games entering that and played the night before against the Lakers. Minnesota hadn't won on the second of a back-to-back all year, anywhere on the road since Dec. 20 in Brooklyn and had dropped 14 straight to the Clippers. Kevin Garnett, Kevin Martin and Nikola Pekovic all missed it, and they aren't expected here. Minnesota pulled a 102-93 OT surprise in Chicago on Nov. 7 but has dropped six straight at home in the series.

Key trends: Chicago is 6-1 ATS in its past seven in Minnesota. The under is 4-1 in the past five meetings.

Early lean: Everything would seem to set up for Minnesota to win this outright.

                          Lakers at Spurs (-17.5, 203.5)

San Antonio was in Dallas on Friday. Los Angeles won a second in a row Thursday, 99-96 in New Orleans. Kobe Bryant had a second straight big outing with 27 points and season-high 12 rebounds. He was questionable with a shoulder injury but probably always will be. The Lakers have lost both meetings this season in routs. The one in San Antonio was 109-87 on Dec. 11. The Spurs have won the past three overall.

Key trends: The Lakers are 0-7 ATS in their past Saturday games. The over has hit in four of San Antonio's past six at home vs. teams with a losing road record.

                          Early lean: Lakers and under.

                          Jazz at Suns (+4.5, 195)

Utah hosted Milwaukee on Friday. Phoenix dropped a sixth consecutive on Thursday, 111-105 against Houston. The Rockets outscored the Suns 20-10 over the last half of the fourth quarter. Archie Goodwin led the Suns with 22 points, while Alex Len added 12 with a career-high 18 rebounds. Utah won the first meeting 110-89 at home on Dec. 21. The Jazz's lead was never below double digits in the second half. Gordon Hayward had 24 for Utah, while not a single Suns starter reached 10 points. The Suns have won seven of their last nine home games in the series.

Key trends: The home team is 5-0 ATS in the past five meetings. The under is 5-1 in the past six in Phoenix.

                          Early lean: Jazz and under.

                          Thunder at Warriors (-6.5, 233.5)

Oklahoma City won its fifth straight on Wednesday, 117-114 over the visiting Magic. The Thunder might have been caught looking ahead a bit as they needed a Durant 3-pointer with under a second left to avoid the upset. He finished with 37 points, his 36th straight game with at least 20. Westbrook might have been better with his third straight triple-double, this time 24 points, a career-high 19 rebounds (most by an NBA point guard since November 2007) and 14 assists. If it wasn't for Curry, those two would be battling for league MVP honors most likely. Speaking of Curry, he was sublime in a 134-121 win in Washington on Wednesday, the Warriors' eighth straight victory. Curry had 11 3-pointers on the way to 51 points. He actually had been slumping a bit his previous three games with 50 total points. The Warriors won the season series with OKC 3-1 last year and have won three straight vs. the Thunder in Oakland.

Key trends: The home team is 5-0 ATS in the past five. The over has hit in seven of the previous nine.

Early lean: This may be the highest total I've ever seen. I just can't go over something that high. Take OKC.
