  • New Jersey allows sports betting

Gov. Chris Christie's administration issued a directive Monday allowing the state's casinos and racetracks to offer sports betting, a move likely to be challenged in court by sports leagues.

The governor said he took his cue from previous federal court rulings that found that nothing in New Jersey law prohibits the casinos and horse racing tracks from offering sports betting.

His action, through the state attorney general's office, is likely to be challenged by the professional and collegiate sports leagues that fought New Jersey's efforts to overturn a ban on sports betting in all but four states. That effort ended with the U.S. Supreme Court declining to hear the case.

Christie suggested casinos and tracks could start offering betting immediately, but it's not clear that will happen. Rachel Ryan, a spokeswoman for the Meadowlands Racetrack said Monday that the track has no plans to offer sports betting now.

I have been waiting for this to happen for years. Still, I will refrain from getting to excited until it actually happens.

I'm for just about any type of sports betting.... But I still think I prefer dealing with the bookie... No cash up front... Only pay and collect at agreed upon number... And the almighty BIG BROTHER is not all up in your business...

Agreed, but millions of us don't know a local bookie.

Would your winnings have to be claimed as income? Therefore requiring you to pay taxes on any winnings!

There's an important ruling that should come down Oct6 and that may open this up.There is already a set-up at MonmouthRacetrack that was put in by Hill of UK/LasVegas to serve the betting public.
I would think the set-up would be like LV sportbooks and the IRS would only know about your business if you hit a payoff that would be 600-1 or greater like they do with horses and slots. If I'm laying 110-100 ain't nobody's business but my own. I live in NY but I may be sleeping in my car in the meadowlands parking garage if this flies.

Its absolutely stunning to see how many Atlantic City casinos have closed down recently. Perhaps they should have waited just a bit to see the sports gambling raise some huge revenues.

                Make a note of this.

There will be no sports book betting in New Jersey for at least 5 more years. Federal law would have to be changed (the Republican-controlled Congress isn't going to do it), and the federal courts are not going to overturn the law. Christie can play chicken all he wants, but it will not work.

It will come someday.....just not for a while.
