Arkansas vs. California
BetOnline.com opened California (4-0 straight up, 2-1 against the spread) as a four-point favorite.
Arkansas (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) has taken the cash each time out, including last Monday’s 89-78 win over SMU as a 5.5-point home favorite. Alandise Harris, a transfer from Houston, was the catalyst for the Razorbacks. Harris produced a game-high 21 points along with six rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Michael Qualls added 16 points, six boards, four assists and three blocks.
Mike Anderson’s team is looking for its first NCAA Tournament bid in his third season at the helm. The Hogs are hoping for big contributions from freshman forward Bobby Portis, a Little Rock product who was a five-star recruit. In the first three games, Portis is averaging 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
Harris is leading Arkansas in scoring by averaging 18.3 points per game. Harris is making 58.6 percent of his attempts from the field and 87 percent from the charity stripe. Qualls is scoring at a 16.3 PPG clip.
Mike Montgomery’s squad has beaten up on inferior competition in its first four games that were all at home. The Bears are led by Jabari Bird, a highly-recruited freshman whose father Carl played at Cal in the 1970s. Bird is making an immediate impact and averaging a team-high 13.5 PPG while making 50 percent of his shots from 3-point land.
The ‘under’ is a perfect 3-0 for Cal so far, while totals have been a wash for the Razorbacks (1-1).
Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Eastern.
Minnesota vs. Syracuse
Minnesota (5-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) has won all five of its games by double-digit margins. The Gophers are coming off Thursday’s 79-57 win over Wofford as 17.5-point home favorites. Austin Colllins led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Elliott Eliason finished with 11 points, 11 boards and seven blocked shots.
Syracuse (4-0 SU, 0-2 ATS) hasn’t looked particularly sharp in its first four games. The Orange trailed Cornell 38-32 at intermission in its season opener. Jim Boeheim’s bunch did dominate the second half and by an 82-60 count, but it failed to cover as a 25-point home favorite.
Syracuse is coming off of a lackluster effort in a 56-50 home win over St. Francis (NY) in last Monday’s non-lined affair. DaJuan Coleman scored a team-high 14 points for the Orange.
The ‘Cuse is led by senior forward C.J. Fair, who is averaging 18.0 points per game. Fair needs to take much better care of the basketball, however, as he’s already committed 18 turnovers in only four games.
Only two Minnesota games have had a total. The ‘under’ was a winner in an 84-58 home win over Montana that had a 148-point tally. In a 74-59 win at Richmond, the 133 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 131-point total.
Junior guard Andre Hollins is averaging a team-best 17.4 PPG. He had 26 and 24-point efforts in wins over Richmond and Montana, respectively. Austin Hollins is the Gophers’ second-leading scorer with a 14.6 PPG average.
BetOnline.com opened the ‘Cuse as a one-point ‘chalk.’
This game will tip about 35 minutes after Arkansas-Cal concludes and ESPN2 will have the telecast.
Dayton vs. Gonzaga
Gonzaga (4-0 SU, 1-1-1 ATS) has won all four of its games by 15 points or more, including Thursday’s 90-74 victory over Washington St. as a 16-point home favorite. The 164 combined points soared ‘over’ the 145.5-point total. Kevin Pangos splashed the nets on 5-of-8 attempts from 3-point land en route to scoring a game-high 27 points. Drew Barham added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Gary Bell Jr. and Przemek Karnowski scored 12 points apiece.
Dayton (4-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) beat up on three cupcake foes at home before capturing a nice win on the road against its former coach. The Flyers went down to Atlanta and beat Ga. Tech by an 82-72 count as eight-point underdogs. Devin Oliver and Jordan Sibert dropped 20 points apiece on the Yellow Jackets.
Pangos, the junior point guard who has started since he walked on campus, is averaging a team-high 18.8 points per game. He has a 15/6 assists-to-turnovers ratio and is shooting 43.8 percent from deep. Bell is averaging 16.0 PPG and has drained 60 percent of his trifectas.
For the first time in six years, Dayton missed the postseason in 2012-2013. But Archie Miller’s team has a chance to be in the mix in the Atlantic-10 thanks to the arrival of Sibert and the return of Matt Kavanaugh. Sibert is a transfer from Ohio St. who is averaging a team-high 13.8 PPG and is making 55 percent of his shots from the field. Kavanaugh, a 6-10 senior center, is back from a one-year suspension. Kavanaugh is averaging only 4.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, but his minutes have been reduced due to foul trouble thus far.
The ‘over’ is 2-1 for Gonzaga, while Dayton saw the ‘over’ cash in its lone game that had a total.
BetOnline.com opened Gonzaga as a seven-point favorite late Sunday afternoon.
ESPN2 will provide television coverage at around midnight Eastern.
